🎉Big news from the mainland beaches! The first Least Tern chicks of the season were hatched at the Bay Sl. Louis Bridge colony!

🐥Our dedicated staff and volunteers have been hard at work setting up temporary educational signs and protective fencing. This vital colony has grown to host over 170 adult Least Terns this season, making it a bustling and vital hub for these beautiful, federally protected beach-nesting birds!

✈From the runway to the beach!🏖

If you’ve been through the Gulfport-Biloxi International Airport lately, you might have seen the Least Tern family ad asking beachgoers to give nesting birds their space.

🐣During nesting season, which runs May through August, our local beaches double as nurseries for vulnerable coastal birds. Because their nests are just little scrapes in the sand and very camouflaged, one wrong step can disturb an entire family.

How you can help:
👉Heed the symbolic fencing which includes various signs such as "Critical Nesting Area" and "Please Tern Around/Detour"
🐕Follow local dog ordinances
🐥Detour around the posted area to avoid chicks and nests along the shoreline
🔭Please watch from afar by using binoculars or a spotting scope (high-powered cameras work too!). Be sure to say hi to a staff member and look through their scope!

🏖Let’s do our part to share the shore and keep these amazing birds and their families safe!

🌎Help scientists understand how climate is affecting the birds around you by participating in Climate Watch!

📝Climate Watch is a community science program where volunteers collect data on specific bird species during winter (January 15-February 15) and spring/summer (May 15-June15) to help scientists understand how birds are responding to climate change.

🌞The spring/summer climate watch for coastal Mississippi takes place this Saturday, May 30th starting at 7:00 AM in Diamondhead, MS. Be prepared to spend a half-day! Everyone is welcome to attend!

👉If you would like to participate or have questions, contact Amanda Douglas, Stewardship Coordinator, at [email protected].

🎋Celebrate Black Birders Week at the Pascagoula River Audubon Center with a photography-focused bird walk this Thursday!🐦

The National Audubon Society proudly supports and the important work of the Collective in uplifting Black voices and experiences in birding, conservation, and STEM.

This year’s theme — Flyways & Freedom: Advocacy, Action, and the Future — reflects both the beauty of migration and the ongoing work of building a more inclusive future outdoors.

To celebrate the week locally, the Pascagoula River Audubon Center is excited to host returning guest Luckie Mosely for a photography-focused bird walk on Thursday, May 28 from 10–11 AM and optional kayaking experience.

We hope you’ll join us in learning, listening, and celebrating community through birds.
All are welcome.
