🥋🇺🇸 This week, the Rotary Club of Ocean Springs had the honor of hearing from David Wilson of Heiwashinkai Mississippi, a remarkable 501(c)(3) nonprofit dojo based in Vancleave that is changing lives across the Mississippi Gulf Coast.
Dave’s story is one of resilience, perseverance, and service. A disabled Air Force veteran, Dave turned to Traditional Japanese Jujutsu as part of his own physical and mental rehabilitation after a devastating motorcycle accident ended his military career. What began as a personal journey toward healing eventually became a mission to help others reclaim strength, confidence, and purpose in their own lives.
Today, Heiwashinkai Jujutsu serves disabled veterans, individuals suffering from PTSD, special needs children and adults, first responders, and members of our community through adaptive martial arts training and mentorship. Their “Grappling With PTSD” program was specifically developed by disabled veterans to help others battling the physical and emotional effects of trauma.
What makes Dave’s work even more inspiring is that many of these classes and programs are offered completely FREE through donations and sponsorships. His nonprofit continues to provide opportunities for veterans and students who may otherwise never have access to this kind of support system, camaraderie, and rehabilitation.
Dave reminded us that martial arts can be about far more than self-defense — they can be about healing, discipline, confidence, and community.
We encourage everyone to learn more about Heiwashinkai Jujutsu, sign up for classes, or consider sponsoring a student or veteran through their nonprofit mission. The impact they are making right here on the Gulf Coast is truly extraordinary. ❤️👏
Thank you again, Dave, for your service, your heart for others, and the incredible work you continue to do for our community
