After months of recovery, Post Shellone (Kemp’s Ridley) and Eugene (Green Sea Turtle) were finally released back into the wild at Cape Canaveral National Seashore. It was an emotional moment for everyone involved. Watching these resilient turtles return to their natural home is a reminder of the importance of conservation and rehabilitation.

This week, in partnership with FWC, we transferred five of our sea turtle patients to Loggerhead Marinelife Center for continued care and rehabilitation.

Each of these turtles has a unique story:
Sailor Swift – a juvenile Kemp’s Ridley being treated for osteomyelitis (a bone infection) caused by cold-stunning
Florence – another juvenile Kemp’s Ridley with a persistent wound, also resulting from cold-stunning
Nugget – a juvenile green sea turtle recovering from gastric impaction and emaciation
Cranberries – a juvenile green receiving care for fibropapillomatosis (FP)
Barnicorn – a juvenile green with a skull and shell injury from a boat strike. He got his name from the barnacle on his forehead—like a unicorn horn!

We’re grateful to our partners at FWC and Loggerhead Marinelife Center. 💚

This morning, Sadie Hawkins, a beloved adult hawksbill Sea Turtle in our care, was safely transferred to Loggerhead Marinelife Center for ongoing treatment. Sadie was rescued after being found entangled in a large fishing net, suffering injuries to her flipper and struggling with buoyancy. Recent test results indicated she would benefit from more advanced diagnostics and long-term rehabilitation. With FWC’s approval, our team coordinated her transfer to ensure she receives the best possible care.

Our remaining Sea Turtle patients are stable and continue to be closely monitored by our veterinary team.

The Coastal Stewards has proudly championed marine life conservation and environmental education for over 40 years.

As environmental nonprofits face increasing challenges securing sustainable funding, our Board of Trustees has completed a strategic review and made the difficult decision to close our Sea Turtle Rehabilitation Center to the public, effective immediately.

Our veterinary care team will continue providing expert treatment for our sea turtle patients until they are safely transferred to other qualified facilities, in coordination with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission. The Gift Store is also now closed.
We deeply appreciate your support and understanding during this transition.

Happy World Oceans Day!

Today, we celebrate the beating blue heart of our planet, and commit to protecting it. From sustaining marine life to regulating our climate, the ocean gives us more than we can imagine.

Let’s give back through action, advocacy, and awareness. The ocean’s future depends on the choices we make today.

What’s tiny, colorful, and everywhere? Microplastics.
These plastic fragments may be small, but their impact on marine life and ecosystems is massive.

From synthetic clothing to broken-down packaging, microplastics infiltrate our beaches, oceans, and even our food chain. Learning to spot them is the first step toward action.

Let’s clean up what we can and stop more from entering the sea.

Coral reefs are the rainforests of the sea—vital, vibrant, and vanishing.

On World Reef Awareness Day, let’s recognize the critical role reefs play in marine biodiversity, coastal protection, and local livelihoods.

Every action counts—ditch harmful sunscreens, support reef-safe tourism, and advocate for climate resilience. Together, we can protect these underwater ecosystems before it’s too late.

Myth: Helping baby turtles reach the ocean is always the right thing to do.

Fact: It may feel helpful, but hatchlings need to make the journey to the sea on their own. This natural process helps them imprint on the beach and boosts their survival.

Respect the process. Protect the species.

Did you know?

A turtle’s shell isn’t just protection—it’s part of its skeleton, made up of over 50 bones including its spine and rib cage.

Understanding these incredible adaptations helps build respect and urgency around protecting endangered marine species. Education is the first step toward meaningful ocean action.
