On October 3, 1993, U.S. service members entered a battle in Mogadishu, Somalia, that would continue into the following day.

Today, we remember the warriors who fought, those who were wounded, and those who made the ultimate sacrifice.

Their courage and sacrifice will not be forgotten.

Army Special Operations Soldier Dies After Nevada Training Accident

A U.S. Army special operations soldier died last week after suffering injuries during an airborne training event in Nevada, according to the Army.
Sgt. 1st Class Andrew Frakes, 34, died Sept. 22 from injuries sustained during the training exercise. The circumstances surrounding the incident remain under investigation.

Frakes was from Savannah, Georgia, and served as a highly decorated member of the Army's special operations community.

During his career, he earned the Ranger Tab, Combat Infantryman Badge, Pathfinder Badge, Air Assault Badge, Military Freefall Parachutist Badge and Military Freefall Jumpmaster Badge, among other awards and qualifications.

"Frakes represented the finest qualities of our nation's special operations forces, Lt. Gen. Lawrence Ferguson, commanding general of U.S. Army Special Operations Command, said in a statement.

Ferguson said Frakes death was deeply felt throughout the special operations community and offered condolences to his family, friends and fellow soldiers.

The Army has not released additional details about the training incident as the investigation continues.
