While you're reading this, someone in the United States is being pulled from the water.
It happens more often than most people realize. According to CDC data, an estimated 22 nonfatal drownings occur every single day across the country — each one a moment when a child, teen, or adult came dangerously close to losing their life in the water.
Survival, however, is not the same as "okay." Nonfatal drowning can result in serious, sometimes lifelong consequences, including hypoxic brain injury caused by a lack of oxygen. Nearly 40% of drowning cases treated in emergency departments require hospitalization, transfer, or further medical care — a rate far higher than for other unintentional injuries.
These aren't distant statistics. They represent real families experiencing real trauma, often in the span of just a few unsupervised seconds near water.
The encouraging truth is that drowning — fatal or nonfatal — is largely preventable. Constant supervision, swim lessons, layers of protection around water, and knowing what to do in an emergency can make all the difference.
