For those interested in barefoot hoof studies, really, there is barefoot research out there. Which tends to get ignored 🤣 Hopefully this brand new study will get noticed. We'll keep talking about it!!

The number of people riding 2-year-old horses I see on social media every day has my stomach in knots. What’s even more frustrating is the justification in the comments when someone tries to educate: ‘Oh, the rider isn’t that heavy,’ or ‘It was only for a few minutes.’ Meanwhile, others are doing full-on cantering and sliding stops on horses whose joints and bodies are far from fully developed.

Science doesn’t lie: young horses shouldn’t be backed until at least 3 years old, and even then, only in light work—mostly walking. Serious work should wait until they’re 4, and in an ideal world, groundwork would be the focus until they’re 6. Unfortunately, that’s far from common practice.

The result? Horses breaking down by the age of 6 or 7, often ending up at auctions or requiring injections that only accelerate their decline.

We have to get this message out for the sake of the horses. Their long-term health and well-being depend on it. The future of our equine partners is worth protecting!

OTTB Foundation

Our president Jackie Acksel has been a lifelong horsewoman, professional jockey and thoroughbred trainer. Established in 2021, OTTB Foundation has successfully placed over 75
horses in new careers off the track.
Our mission is creating a stress free environment to carefully restart our horses and set them up for a successful future beyond racing. Our team was featured at the 2022 RRP for top 10
rehoming organizations in the country And "Best Conditioned' at the 2021 RRP in the show hunter division. With our hands on approach and expertise in the thoroughbred industry, our graduates will learn the key fundamentals for their new adventure.

The mission is to RE-START the OTTB .
Giving the horse the best opportunity to achieve success with our program.
