🩺 Healthcare professionals play such an important role in breaking the silence on domestic violence. Sometimes, a physician, nurse, or trusted healthcare professional may be the first person to recognize that something isn't right. ⚠

A compassionate conversation, a safe space to talk, or simply knowing what resources are available can be the beginning of someone finding help, hope, and healing.

👨‍👧‍👧👩‍👧‍👧Let's remember the children, domestic violence affects them also. Children who witness or experience violence can carry the emotional effects long after the moment has passed.

The Family Violence Prevention Workgroup wants to send a warm THANK YOU to New Covenant Missionary Baptist Church for standing with your community and bringing awareness to domestic violence within your congregation!

You didn't just wear purple… you gave PURPLE a PURPOSE! 🙌🏽

🙏🏽 The church has always been a place of faith, hope, healing, and refuge. We must recognize that domestic violence doesn't stop at the church doors. It can affect anyone, including those sitting in our pews, singing in our choirs, serving in ministry, and even leading our congregations.

For too long, domestic violence has been a conversation many faith communities have been uncomfortable having. Fear, shame, stigma, and the belief that family matters should remain private have sometimes kept victims suffering in silence.

Being quiet won't silence or stop abuse.
Awareness, education, compassion, and action can break the cycle!

💜 Faith and safety go hand in hand. Prayer is powerful, and so is connecting someone with the resources, protection, and support they need. Staying in an abusive situation is not a requirement of faith.

FOUNDATIONS OF A HEALTHY RELATIONSHIP!

It's October but we want to do more than raise awareness.
Let's start conversations that teach healthy love and foster better relationships.

END the cycle of abuse.

Love should never hurt, intimidate, control, or leave you questioning your worth. Every healthy relationship needs three essentials: PEACE, LOVE, and RESPECT!
Without them, love alone is not enough.

💜 Peace means feeling safe, secure, and free to be yourself.

💜 Love means kindness, compassion, trust, and support.

💜 Respect means honoring boundaries, accepting differences, and understanding that NO means NO.

According to the CDC's 2023 Youth Risk Behavior Survey, 10.4% of high school students who dated reported experiencing physical dating violence within the previous year. That's approximately 1 in 10 young people! 💔

Dating should be an opportunity to experience friendship, happiness, trust, and healthy connections, NOT fear, jealousy, threats, manipulative or controlling behavior.

We must break the cycle BEFORE it becomes a pattern passed from one relationship or generation to the next.

Let's teach our young people that jealousy is NOT proof of love, control is NOT protection, and disrespect is NEVER acceptable.

💜 Let's model RESPECT.
💜 Let's encourage PEACE.

Parents, educators, mentors, friends, and community we have a role in teaching the next generation what healthy love looks like. Let's listen without judgment, encourage conversations, recognize warning signs, and remind young people that their voices matter TOO.

DOMESTIC VIOLENCE IS MORE THAN JUST PHYSICAL!

Sometimes the deepest wounds are the ones no one can see. 💔

When we think about domestic violence, we think of bruises, broken bones, or physical injuries but abuse doesn't always leave a visible mark.

💜 Emotional manipulation
💜 Financial control
💜 Threats and intimidation
💜Constant criticism and humiliation
💜 Isolation from family and friends
💜 Stalking, jealousy, and controlling behavior
💜Gaslighting that makes you question your own reality

These are all forms of abuse, and the emotional scars can last after the scars are healed.

Why anyone would intentionally cause this kind of pain to someone they claim to love is difficult to understand. But it happens every single day, in every community, and quite possibly to someone you know.

Sometimes it's the person who smiles the brightest, keeps everything together, or insists that everything is fine.

💜PAY ATTENTION TO THE SIGNS!

If something in your relationship constantly makes you feel afraid, anxious, controlled, isolated, or less than worthy, don't ignore those feelings.

It may feel uncomfortable for a reason.
Love should not leave you walking on eggshells, questioning your worth, or afraid to speak your mind. Love should feel safe, respectful, and supportive.

And to anyone silently experiencing abuse, please hear this:
You don't have to wait for abuse to become physical before reaching out for support.

🦋💜 A Safe Place begins with knowing the RESOURCES. 💜🦋

For many victims of domestic violence, the hardest part isn't finding the courage to leave. It's finding a safe place to go, someone who will listen, and the reassurance that they won't have to face tomorrow alone.

This powerful image speaks of "she", but we must remember that domestic violence has no gender and does not discriminate.

It affects children, families, and people from all walks of life.
More than 1 in 3 women and 1 in 6 men in the U.S. experience contact sexual violence, physical
violence, and/or stalking by an intimate partner in their lifetime.

Men experience fear, emotional abuse, physical violence, and isolation, too. Often, their pain goes unspoken because they're afraid of being judged, ridiculed, or not believed.

💜EVERY victim deserves to be heard. EVERY survivor deserves support. EVERY person deserves a safe place to land, and Everyone deserves a good night of sleep.💜

October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month, and the Family Violence Prevention Workgroup encourages our community to become that safe place through compassion, education, advocacy, and action.

Sometimes being someone's safe place begins with simply saying, “I believe you. You matter. You are not alone.”
