The War At Home
It is a sad and undeniable fact that more Veterans have died by their own hand than by that of an enemy combatant. The War at Home is one that knows no age, no color, and no particular branch of service; it affects us all.
Sadly, isolation is one of the reasons depression is killing our Veterans; the thought that they are alone in their battles. When the struggles become unbearable, we tend to go to a dark place to be alone. For so many Veterans, to reach out and ask for help is a sign of weakness. This could not be farther from the truth. The strength it takes to compose yourself, look someone in the eye and say, โHelp me,โ is undeniable. Nothing worth having is easy, nothing worth fighting for is easy, this battle against su***de will not be easy; but WE can do this. Together. This is what Bonfires: Where Veterans Connect is all about.
To eliminate su***de in Veterans is a battle within itself and it takes an army of like-minded folks to come together and fight. Through pro-social activities like Bonfires: Where Veterans Connect, we can save lives. Letting our Veterans know they are not alone, that we are here for them! Coming together for something as simple as a bonfire with fellow Veterans can greatly decrease the notion that they are alone. Our Veterans did not survive fighting a war thousands of miles away to come home and succumb to the War at Home. This is what Bonfires: Where Veterans Connect hopes to eliminate and to help by providing a simple fellowship of Veterans who have each others back.
