Some days we win. Some days we weep.
Yesterday, we wept. 🪽🙏🐾
We were called to help a kitten that had been hit by a car. A good Samaritan driving down a road in NW Ocala saw her lying in the roadway and couldn’t look away. He stopped, checked on her, and realized she was still breathing.
When she arrived in our care, a quick examination told us things were not looking good. But in rescue, we are always hopeful. We believe every life deserves a fighting chance, no matter how small.
She was bleeding internally. Blood was seeping from her hind end. Her tiny body was swollen, and she appeared to have a broken leg. We immediately called the ER and rushed her to On Point Veterinary Care.
The staff acted quickly and took us straight back for triage. After further examination, we learned her hip was shattered, her organs had herniated, and she was in tremendous pain. She would have needed multiple orthopedic surgeries just to begin repairing the damage and that was only if her frail little body could survive the extensive internal injuries she had already suffered.
Faced with the impossible decision that so many rescuers know too well, we chose to let her go peacefully.
We named her Angelica.
We held her paw and caressed her face gently as she crossed the Rainbow Bridge, and we wept.
We wept for Angelica. We wept for all the innocent animals who lose their lives on our roads every day. We wept for a future she would never get to experience.
We promised her that a beautiful light would carry her safely to the other side, where she could run and play without pain. Where she would never know hunger, fear, or loneliness again. Where she would be safe, cherished, and loved beyond measure.
I only knew Angelica for a short time, but I wanted her to know that she mattered. That she was loved. That her life had value, no matter how brief her time on earth may have been.
And today, I’m still weeping.
Run free, sweet Angelica. You were loved.
My heart breaks for this little one. Even though her story ended far too soon, she left this world with something every living creature deserves: kindness, comfort, and someone holding her paw. That matters.
