At six years old, Shane Pica looked at the houseparents who would soon help raise him and asked a pretty big question:
“Are you going to be my new parents?”
“We hope so,” they answered.
Shane and his two brothers had come to the Children’s Home during a difficult time in their lives. At six years old, there was no way Shane could have known what the years ahead would hold.
In time, those houseparents became Mom and Dad.
Shane grew up surrounded by people who loved him, guided him, and gave him a foundation to stand on. He went to church, was baptized, played sports, and eventually attended college in Ohio.
Looking back now, we can see the Lord’s faithfulness through so much of Shane’s story, not simply in what he overcame, but in what was planted in him along the way.
Because today, Shane is the one doing the planting.
He is a husband. A father. A football coach at Robinson High School. He is raising his own children and investing in young people who need encouragement, direction, and someone in their corner.
And when Shane talks about the way he raises his own family, he points back to the people who once did the same for him:
“There is a lot in the way I parent because of how they parented me.”
That may be one of the most beautiful parts of Shane’s story.
The love once given to a little boy became love he would one day give to his own children.
The encouragement once poured into him is now being poured into another generation.
And the faith planted years ago continues to bear fruit.
When we asked Shane what he would tell the children living at the Home today, his answer brought his story full circle:
“You are blessed. You cannot see everything your future holds yet, but this place saves lives.”
At five years old, Shane couldn’t see everything his future held either.
Today, we get to see some of the fruit. ❤️
