The speaker at SEPA's annual meeting spoke of his history working with the Lakota People. He ended his talk by reading the last few paragraphs of a speech by Chief Arvol Looking Horse, of the Lakota, Dakota, and Nakota Nations. Read the entire speech by clicking in the box below.
"Know that you yourself are essential to this world. Understand both the blessing and the burden of that. You yourself are desperately needed to save the soul of this world. Did you think you were put here for something less? In a Sacred Hoop of Life, there is no beginning and no ending."

I, Chief Arvol Looking Horse ask you to understand an Indigenous perspective on what has happened in America, what we call "Turtle Island."

Urgent Action: Denounce the murder of Sebastián Alonso Juan, land defender from Huehuetenango

Dear William,

On January 17, 2017, Guatemalan human rights and land defender, Sebastián Alonso Juan, was murdered during a peaceful protest against the imposition of a hydroelectric megaproject consisting of three dams.

TAKE ACTION! Demand that Guatemalan authorities act swiftly to investigate and prosecute those responsible for this atrocious violent act.

Community members from the Ixquisis region of San Mateo Ixtatán, located in the north of Huehuetenango, held a peaceful demonstration against the construction of three dams by the company, Promoción y Desarrollos Hídricos, Sociedad Anónima (Promotion and Hydroelectric Development, LLC, also known by the abbreviation PDH, SA).

Representatives of the National Civil Police, PDH S.A.'s private security, and privately-contracted forest rangers were all armed and present on January 17 when shots were fired into the crowd of peaceful protesters and Sebastián Alonso Juan, an elderly participant, was killed.

Ancestral and community authorities gather in Santa Eulalia to pay their respects to Sebastián Alonzo Juan, killed on January 17, 2017.
The day of Juan's murder, NISGUA joined several other international and Guatemalan organizations in denouncing this murder, and calling for an end to the attacks against communities that defend human rights, life, and natural resources.

Your letters are important! Please take a moment to write to the offices of the Public Prosecutor and the Human Rights Ombudsman, requesting they take immediate action.

In solidarity,

David Imhoff
U.S. Operations & Programs Coordinator
with the entire NISGUA team: Becky, Bridget, Martha & Val
