OSCA Nicaragua Sister Partnership

OSCA Nicaragua Sister Partnership A partnership between the Oberlin Student Coop Association and the UNAG of San Juan de Limay, Nicaragua since 1992.

The Oberlin Student Cooperative Association (OSCA) has maintained a relationship with the UNAG specifically in San Juan de Limay, Estelí, Nicaragua since 1992. The UNAG (Unión Nacional de Agricultores y Ganaderos en Nicaragua or the National Union for Ranchers and Farmers in Nicaragua) is a national non-profit union that was born in 1981 in an effort to support the needs of small rural farmers and

producers. Each year, OSCA donates between $3,000 and $5,000 to a revolving microcredit loan program directed at mostly women farmers in Limay. The intent of the fund is to provide economic development opportunities for community members in order to have agency over their investments and finances. This fund is the only feasible mode of credit available in the area and as of today OSCA is the main contributor. It is our vision that OSCA will work to enact its cooperative principles in supporting other cooperative organizations, demonstrating its commitment to food access and equitable food systems, and cooperative education through its financial support of Limay projects.
