This past weekend we held our annual year end camp out and advancement ceremony. On Saturday, we played gaga ball, fished, made S'mores and told stories around the campfire. Sunday saw the pack come together to celebrate what an amazing year it's been and we packed the pavilion at Heartland Homestead to the brim.

The school year may be at an end, but we've got plenty of fun activities planned for the summer (hiking some new locations, our second annual modeling rocket day, an, of course, S'mores Cub Adventures out at Firelands Scout Reservation).

Late post.

Last den meeting before summer was this past Thursday (5/21). The Webelos decided to do an egg drop. Rank requirements were complete so this was for fun.

Contraptions were dropped from 10’ and 20’ in the church stairwell. Only one egg was cracked during the drops. Awesome job keeping those eggs safe!

Lions and Tigers finished up Curiosity, Intrigue, and Magical Mysteries. They made their wands and learned magic tricks.

I completely missed what the Wolves and Bears did. They were outside having fun.

We had a great time at our pack's first trip out to Beaumont Scout Reservation for our first Tough Cubbers - LEC. The scouts lived the Mario dream, racing, building, shooting, and problem solving, individually and as a team. We may have covered 7+ miles in one day, but that's nothing a campfire with S'mores and skits (original creations by the scouts) can't fix.

Members of Pack 460 recently spent the morning combing the beach at Lakeview Park, clearing away a wide variety of trash. We even lucked out and got to see the USS Cleveland on its way to be commissioned.

We had regular den meetings this past Thursday. The Webelos den completed Art Explosion (painting with everything except paint brushes). The Bear den worked on their Bears on Bikes elective.

Several friendly tug of war contests were had as well.

We’re wrapping things up before summer break. Most of the kids have completed requirements for their rank patch. We’re trying to get outside and enjoy this weather as much as possible.

What do you do when the local elementary school has an after school event on the same night as your Cub Scout meeting and several families don’t attend our elementary school? The show must go on!

We honestly had no idea how many families/youth would show up.

We had ~10 youth attend the meeting and the focus was having fun outside (the weather was amazing). We setup the inflatable GagaBall pit and the den leaders came up with games.

Some games were a hit and others were not. There were some learning lessons for us. Overall, the meeting was a success. We’ll be back to our regularly scheduled program next week.

Our pack meeting for February was a trip to the observatory and planetarium at the Oberlin College. Thank you to David Lengyel for hosting us and letting us check out the night sky with the telescopes and binoculars.

Pinewood derby season has come and gone. The small but mighty Oberlin Cub Scout pack had their annual pinewood derby this past Sunday at JVS.

Check-in started at noon. Families and cars trickled in until start time at 2:30. A few adjustments were needed but all cars passed inspection. The kids had a great time racing their cars and cheering each other on.

The race was streamed online because a few kiddos were sick and unable to attend (it’s that time of the year). Their cars were dropped off and they were still able to watch their cars race.

Big thanks to Heartland Homestead for donating the pinewood derby kits to the kids.

The pork raffle winners were announced and they were contacted about their winnings. Thank you so much to everyone who purchased a ticket. We will be able to attend the Tough Cubber event this year. The money will also help with summer camp and all the other ‘stuff’ that goes into running a Cub Scout unit.

Another thank you to Dave Griffiths for modernizing our race with the derbynet software. Syncing the tablet at the registration table to the screen at the pit to the laptop controlling the race was very cool to see. It was like magic.

The OB cub scouts had their annual winter day at Firelands Scout Reservation for the older half of the pack. Several of the families braved the weather and joined us for fun in the snow.

We started by hiking (and rolling) down the road to the bridge separating the two halves of camp. When we got back, we got warm in the cabin, had tomato soup and grilled cheese sandwiches while playing games. We burned off lunch by sledding and then getting outside for building snowmen. I think everyone had a good time and will sleep very well tonight.

My new favorite game in this weather is throwing gigantic snowballs off the bridge to break the ice.

It truly was a beautiful day at camp. The weather cooperated; not too cold, not too windy, and just enough snowfall. It was great getting to see familiar faces from camp and from neighboring units.

We had our annual Christmas bowling party at College Lanes last night. We handed out a few lingering awards and had a good time bowling. It was nice to just relax and hang out.

The pack recharter is complete and we’ll be ready to continue our scouting journey into the new year.
