Yesterday in Orangeburg, SC, Kimberly Ratcliff and I had the pleasure of presenting at South Carolina State University for MEAT UP: A Grilling Experience, in partnership with SC State Public Service & Agriculture and Ratcliff Premium Meats. The campus was buzzing with excitement as students took on the grill, proudly honing their skills and sharing how eager they are to showcase them at home, one student even said, “now my dad may allow me on his grill.”
Working in pairs, the students not only learned about grilling but also strengthened their teamwork and communication skills, key skills for any future in agriculture. MEAT UP offered more than just a culinary lesson; it introduced concepts in sourcing, product quality, branding, and market strategy, connecting hands-on grilling with the fundamentals of agricultural entrepreneurship.
Special thanks to Dr.Louis Whitesides, Vice President and Executive Director of the SC State University 1890 Research & Extension Program, and the entire Extension team for their leadership and support in making this event possible. Their commitment to advancing public service, student development, and lifelong learning opportunities continues to transform the lives of South Carolinians.
It’s always a great day for when we can give back to our youth, who are the future of agriculture. Experiences like these inspire and empower the next generation, and we’re grateful to all our partners and participants for making it possible.
