Conservatives for Responsible Stewardship

Conservatives for Responsible Stewardship CRS is a national nonprofit grassroots organization founded on the premise that environmental stewardship and conservation are inherently conservative.

There was a time when conservation wasn’t a political wedge issue.

Both parties supported:
• Land protection
• Wildlife preservation
• Clean water initiatives

We believe it can be that way again—because nature doesn’t belong to a party.

The cost of abandoned oil and gas wells shouldn’t fall on taxpayers.

For years, weak bonding rules allowed companies to drill on public lands, profit, and walk away—leaving behind cleanup costs that now total billions.

The 2023 reforms finally fixed that by requiring companies—not taxpayers—to pay for proper cleanup and reclamation.

Now those protections are at risk of being rolled back.

We’re urging the Trump Administration to keep oil and gas bonding reforms in place and protect taxpayers from being stuck with industry cleanup bills.

At Conservatives for Responsible Stewardship, we believe fiscal responsibility and responsible land management go hand in hand.

Bad actors in the oil and gas industry have a long history of, after extracting all the profitable oil and gas, using tricks such as asset transfer and bankruptcy to escape their plugging/cleanup obligations. That practice has left the landscape...

Utah has an opportunity to modernize oil infrastructure with smarter, more efficient energy solutions that support both reliability and responsible stewardship. New op-ed in The Salt Lake Tribune co-authored by Steve Handy, a board member of Conservatives for Responsible Stewardship.

“This approach is not about penalizing industry,” Steve Handy and Patrice Arent write in an op-ed. “It is about ensuring that the system reflects real-world conditions and that financial responsibility is appropriately matched to potential liability.”

Everyone says they care about conservation.

But protecting public lands and wildlife takes more than good intentions—it takes consistent advocacy, education, and action.

At Conservatives for Responsible Stewardship, we work to ensure responsible stewardship remains part of the national conversation, even when it’s unpopular or politically inconvenient.

That work is only possible because of supporters who believe protecting our natural heritage matters.

If you want to help build a stronger future for conservation, consider donating today.

The most expensive environmental policy is ignoring the problem.

When conservation is delayed:
• Restoration costs rise
• Wildlife loss becomes permanent
• Infrastructure damage increases
• Communities pay more later

Doing nothing isn’t neutral—it’s costly.

Protecting conservation gains takes steady work—tracking policy changes, responding quickly, and making sure decisions are grounded in facts.

That work only continues with support from people who care about getting it right.

Florida's "energy cancel culture" is a real thing. David Jenkins of CRS breaks the issue down and what it means for energy consumers in Florida who are tired of sky-high electricity costs. Read David's op-ed in the Tampa Bay Times.

As a lifelong conservative who has spent decades working on energy-related issues, including serving as a campaign surrogate on energy for John McCain’s 2008 presidential run, I recall that the GOP et...

The Roadless Rule has helped protect some of the most intact forests in the country from roads, fragmentation, and long-term damage.

Rolling it back would open the door to new development in areas that already serve important ecological and watershed functions.

📢 Urge strong protections for roadless areas:

The Trump administration just announced plans to rescind the 2001 Roadless Rule, threatening protections for 58 million acres of national forest land across the country – including millions of acres in Montana, Idaho, Wyoming, and Alaska.These...

Every year, wildlife-vehicle collisions injure thousands of people and kill millions of animals—but we already know how to prevent it.

Wildlife crossings work. Overpasses, underpasses, and fencing significantly reduce crashes and save lives.

H.R. 6078 would make this proven program permanent before it expires.

📢 Tell Congress to support it:

Our roads shouldn’t be a deadly threat to people or animals. Every year, thousands of Americans are injured in collisions with wildlife, and millions of animals—from elk and deer to bear—are killed. These tragedies are preventable, and there’s a...
