Jenn’s Uncommon Critters visited Oakton Library on Wednesday afternoon, July 29 with a variety of unusual animals to introduce to a capacity audience at Oakton Library.

The animals included the more familiar Guinea pig and tortoise, a scorpion with a special nighttime defense that shows up under a black light, a few snakes, and Bud the Tegu lizard.
After a presentation introducing the animals, the kids were allowed to view them up close and touch most of them.

Thursday's "Owl Pellets" program at Oakton Library.

Oakton's meeting room was filled with young biologists who had a very interesting afternoon learning about owls.
Owl pellets include bones, fur and other indigestible parts of small animals from the owl's diet. Participants were provided with a (cleaned, sanitized) owl pellet, plus supplies and utensils to dissect the pellet.

This program was created and presented by Assistant Youth Services Manager, Marcia Jackon, and was funded by the Friends of Oakton Library.

Wednesday afternoon, Abby from Science Heroes shared the program “Digging It” with a large audience at Oakton Library.

No shovels were harmed during the afternoon as there was no actual digging required. Instead, the program focused on basic scientific skills and investigative techniques – observe, formulate a hypothesis, and experiment – involving everyday experience and phenomena, such as air pressure, gravity, kinetic energy and wind power.

The kids had a great time since each experiment required a number of lab assistants.

On Wednesday, the Oakton Staff hosted a Unicorn Party.
Participants had an opportunity to create bracelets and other jewelry, visit a photo booth, get a tattoo, play Pin the Horn on a Unicorn, and enjoy Unicorn snow cones and make and decorate Unicorn Bark candy.

Thank you to the Fairfax County Police Department, Fair Oaks District Station for your visit to Oakton Library on Thursday.
Police officers discussed the police department, helped the kids create their own fingerprint cards, and let them see the police car.

Afterward, since everyone's hands were already messy, kids also had a change to create some fingerpainting art.

Raging Reptiles visited Oakton Library on Wednesday, June 24.
Nicolas brought a variety of animals and discussed how to properly care for and safely handle reptiles. The reptiles that came to visit were used to being handled and the kids were allowed to touch some of the animals at the end of the program.
