Oaks Indian Mission

Oaks Indian Mission 501(c)(3), residential childcare facility licensed by Oklahoma Department of Human Services. Because walking together is better than walking alone.

The Oaks Indian Mission has roots which run deep into the history of the Cherokee Nation. Officially, the Mission began in 1801, when the tribe invited Moravian missionaries to open a school in Georgia, a few miles from the seat of the Cherokee government. This school would prepare many of the tribe's leaders in the decades following. When the Cherokee were forced to leave their homes and relocate

in Indian Territory, the missionaries left their homes as well, choosing to travel the same "Trail of Tears", reestablishing the mission at what is now Oaks, OK. One of the first school bells to ring in Indian Territory rang there in 1842. In 1902, Oaks Indian Mission became a Lutheran ministry. A residential home for Indian children opened its doors in 1926. This long legacy of quality education and spiritual formation is at the heart of what still makes Oaks Indian Mission a special place for children and the shaping of their future.

After-school fun at Oaks Indian Mission! 💙

For our kids who aren’t involved in sports, we still want to make sure they have something fun to look forward to after school!
Today was all about getting outside, staying active, spending time together, and just being kids. 😊

We love finding different ways for every child to feel included, connected, and part of the fun! ❤️

We are so thankful for our friends from Booneville, Arkansas, who took the time to come down and spend this past Saturday with our boys! ❤️

Pastor John shared a great message about choices and integrity and what it means to stand firm in your faith, even when it isn’t the easiest choice. He shared the story of Daniel in the lions’ den and the three Hebrew boys in the fiery furnace, reminding our boys of the importance of trusting God and choosing to do what is right.

Thank you to our Booneville friends for continuing to invest your time, love, and faith into the children we serve at Oaks Indian Mission. We are grateful for you! 🙏❤️

There’s always some good cooking happening in our cottages! 🍜🥢❤️

The boys in Marshall Cottage recently enjoyed homemade chicken stir fry, lo mein, and crab rangoons!

Our house parents prefer making homemade meals, and the boys are learning right alongside them; picking up cooking skills, trying new foods, and of course enjoying all the tasty results! 😋

And the best part? She even shared her recipes with us! So be sure to check them out and maybe give them a try at home! ❤️

It is with very heavy hearts that the Oaks Indian Mission family shares the passing of our dear friend and longtime employee, Julienne. 🤍

For 15 years, Julienne faithfully served Oaks Indian Mission, first as a house parent with her husband, Dave, where she poured her heart into caring for, encouraging, and loving the children who called Oaks home. She later spent five years serving as an Administrative Assistant in our office, continuing to be a steady, caring presence for our children, families, staff, and everyone who walked through our doors.

To Julienne, this was never just a job. She had a genuine heart for the children we serve and dedicated so much of her life to making sure they felt cared for, supported, and loved. Over the years, she became much more than a coworker; she became family. Her kindness, dedication, laughter, and servant’s heart have left a lasting mark on this Mission and on countless lives.

One of the special parts of Julienne’s time at Oaks was having the opportunity to work alongside her daughter, Ashley Cooper. Sharing the same campus and the same heart for serving others made their time here even more meaningful. Those of us at Oaks had the privilege of seeing firsthand the special bond between Julienne and Ashley and the love they shared as mother and daughter.

Above all, Julienne was a devoted mother, wife, sister, and grandma who loved her family dearly. Our hearts are especially with Ashley and the entire family as they walk through this tremendous loss.

We are incredibly grateful for the many years God allowed us to share with Julienne and for the love and service she gave so freely. Her presence will be deeply missed around our campus, but the impact she made on Oaks Indian Mission and the children and families we serve will never be forgotten.

Please continue to keep Ashley and Julienne’s entire family in your prayers in the days ahead. 🤍

“Well done, good and faithful servant.” — Matthew 25:23

Rest peacefully, Julienne. Thank you for giving so much of your life and your heart to Oaks Indian Mission. You will forever be a part of our Oaks family and our story. 🤍

❤️ Thank You, Bethany & Fredericksburg Lutheran Church! ❤️

We were so blessed to welcome Bethany Lutheran church and Fredericksburg Lutheran church from Nebraska and their youth back to Oaks Indian Mission for another year!

Their group spent time touring our campus and jumped right in to serve in so many ways—planting and painting flower beds around Marshall Cottage 🌸, organizing our Care Closet, and even putting together new twin bed frames for our kids. 🛏️

We are incredibly thankful for the time, hard work, and willing hearts each of you shared with us. It is always such a blessing to have your group here, and your kindness leaves a lasting impact on our campus and the children we serve.

Thank you for choosing to spend part of your summer serving alongside us. We hope you enjoyed your time at Oaks as much as we enjoyed having you! ❤️

We can’t wait to welcome you back again!

🖨️✨ Bringing ideas to LIFE!

Our new 3D printer is up and running as part of our STEM Program at Oaks Indian Mission! 🙌

We are SO excited for our kids to dive into STEM, get creative, learn new skills, and turn their ideas into something they can actually hold in their hands! 💡

The possibilities are endless, and we can’t wait to see what they create! 💙

📚✏️ It’s been a busy week around here!

We’ve been busy getting everything ready for the first day of school, and our kids officially headed back to the classroom on Thursday! 🍎🎒

Before heading back, our boys enjoyed getting outside for a fun game of stickball—a great way to spend some time together before jumping back into the school routine!

We’ve also had some exciting changes over the summer, including welcoming two new house parents to our Oaks Indian Mission family. 🤍

We’re excited for the many changes happening around campus and looking forward to a new year filled with learning, growing, new experiences, and making memories along the way.

Here’s to a great school year! 🌟

This past weekend, we celebrated 225 years of ministry at Oaks Indian Mission.

What an incredible day it was as we reflected on our history, from the very beginning to where God has brought us today. Seeing how far this ministry has come over the past 225 years is a powerful reminder of God's faithfulness through every generation.

We are incredibly thankful for our faithful donors whose generosity has made this ministry possible for so many years. Your support has allowed Oaks Indian Mission to continue serving children and families and changing lives for generations.

A heartfelt thank you to our Board members and Executive Director for their faithful leadership, guidance, and unwavering commitment throughout the years. Your dedication and countless hours of service have helped shape this ministry and ensure its mission continues for future generations.

We are also deeply grateful for our dedicated staff, whose hearts for serving children and families are evident every single day. Their compassion, commitment, and love make a lasting impact on the lives of those we serve.

To everyone who has been a part of the Oaks Indian Mission story over the past 225 years, thank you. Your prayers, generosity, leadership, and service have made an eternal difference. We look forward with faith and hope as God continues to write the next chapter of this ministry. ❤️
