"Is [the curriculum] by itself educating students for the world they're going into?" That's the question that compelled teachers at Thomas A. Edison in New York City to start The Design Lab—a research and development department where students develop essential skills to prepare them for 21st-century jobs: communication, collaboration, design thinking, and professionalism.

At the lab, students collaborate with teachers to design their lessons. Today, over 95% of students at Edison graduate on time in four years, compared to 81% citywide. "Education is the perfect vantage point to support a person in actualizing who they are and truly becoming the best version of themselves." Erin Whalen wanted to design a school that supported young people who lived at the margins, experiencing hardships like housing instability, foster care, probation, and more. So, a decade ago, he applied to our Super School Challenge, and Da Vinci RISE High School was born.

Today, RISE is teaching and supporting nearly 3,000 students across Southern California with flexible learning schedules, real-world projects, and skill development that will support them in multiple career paths.
