Most librarians help students find books. Elizabethton High School’s Dustin Hensley helps them find problems they can solve—and gives them the confidence to solve them.

Dustin created a program built around the belief that young people should be part of solving community problems—not simply learning about them.

So when a student spots neglected downtown space, a gap in mental health support, or a challenge facing local leaders, Dustin’s first question isn’t, “Can you do this?,” it’s, “Who do we need to call?”

A semester may begin with students asking Dustin to proofread every email they write. By the end, they’re calling the county mayor themselves.

That’s the kind of confidence Elizabethton is building every day: students who understand they have the power to contribute to their communities.

Dustin’s story is one chapter in a larger effort between EHS and XQ to rethink what learning can look like when students are trusted with meaningful work.

Last week, Elizabethton High School (EHS), an XQ school in Tennessee, celebrated the premiere of Murder 101, a new Prime Video documentary featuring EHS, and the whole town showed up for it.

Nearly 200 people packed into a local theater—families, educators, neighbors for a red carpet, cameras, and the hometown Hollywood moment these students earned.

But more than that, it was a community showing its young people, loud and clear, that their work matters.

XQ was proud to stand with one of our own—joining EHS and KT Studios in honoring the students, Mr. Campbell's incredible teaching, and everyone at EHS who's built a culture where learning extends beyond an assignment, a classroom, or even the school itself.

Swipe through to see what it looks like when a community shows up for its students. 🎥🍿🧡

"I could understand the pain these victims' families were going through. It's opened my eyes that these are real people and real stories."
That's Alivia, a student in Alex Campbell's class at Elizabethton High School—where students don't just study true crime, they investigate it. Every year, his class digs into a series of unsolved murders.
Alivia joined for the thrill, having grown up watching Criminal Minds. What she found instead was personal: working through the case files, she found herself processing a loss of her own—and a reason to fight for victims who'd been silenced for decades.
That fight became a calling. After graduation, Alivia heads to East Tennessee State University to study criminal justice.
Watch her story and more from our Elizabethton+XQ series.

Plenty of high school students watch true crime. But at this XQ school in northeast Tennessee, Alex Campbell’s students get to try their hand at investigating a real cold case. 🔎✨

“How could anybody think that solving a 30-year-old cold case is less rigorous than solving a problem in a book, and the answer’s already in the back?”

What happens next? A real investigation, with real consequences. An Amazon docuseries, Murder 101. 🎥👀

Most high school assignments end in a grade.

This one ended up on Amazon Prime.

At Elizabethton High School, an XQ school in northeast Tennessee, teacher Alex Campbell saw an opportunity to turn true crime into the kind of learning no single textbook could teach. He gave his class a cold case that stumped law enforcement for decades.

What happened next is a real, remarkable journey few high schools would ever dare to travel.

Murder 101 premieres July 13 on Prime Video. Save the date and stay tuned to learn more about the students and schools behind the series.

Colorado brought students, educators, and policymakers face to face to take a hard look at the future of high school.

From roundtables at the Colorado Department of Education to a community activation at Larimer Square, the conversation moved beyond ideas to what it looks like in practice—in a state already leading the way and continuing to push the work forward.
