More often than not, the toughest challenges aren't solved by one student alone.

That’s why Generous Collaborators is one of our five XQ Learner Outcomes. Together, they answer a big question: what should every young person walk out of high school with? Our answer is the knowledge and skills to thrive in the future.

How are generous collaborators defined? They are self-aware team members who bring their strengths. Talent-seekers who find the expertise of others. Essential co-creators—because of what they bring, and how they show up. Inquisitive world citizens who seek out—and respect—a rich variety of points of view.

Today's high school students are graduating into a complex and ever-changing world. More than ever, they need a collaborative mindset, a willingness to listen, and the ability to work as a team in classrooms, schools and communities.

Generous collaborators do just that. They show up. They seek out different points of view, build on each other’s ideas, and understand that the best solutions are rarely a solo effort.

“I feel more confident in math class.”

That’s what one Idaho student told us about learning through Math Badging. Another, who once counted math among their least favorite subjects, now puts it in the top three.

Instead of earning one grade for a whole course, students earn badges for specific math concepts by showing they understand them and can use them in real life. They can see what they've mastered and what they're still working on, and they keep going until it clicks.

In Blackfoot, Idaho, that meant students using math to study their town's most dangerous intersections, then presenting their findings to the mayor and police chief. And one student who used to dread math now ranks it in their top three.

There's more than one way to show you know the math.

Right now, a math grade can't tell you which concepts a student has nailed and which ones still trip them up. Math Badging changes the equation. Students earn badges by showing they understand key math concepts and can use them in real life.

Get stuck on one concept? Keep working on it without starting the whole course over. Master it? Move ahead. Together, the badges add up to the math students need to graduate and beyond.

Because the goal isn't just to get through math. It's to understand it.

Math skills pay off. Stronger math skills could raise a person’s wages by an average of $21,044 a year.

Yet too many high school students move through math without seeing how it connects to their lives or futures. So they ask, “When am I ever going to use this?”

Math Badging helps them see the connection. To earn a badge, students have to do more than get the right answer. They show they understand a concept and can put it to work in a real situation.

The most important ways a teacher shapes a student can’t be measured by a test.

It’s knowing when to push and when to listen. Believing in a student before they fully believe in themselves. Creating a classroom where young people feel safe enough to ask questions, take risks, make mistakes, and try again.

Strong relationships with adults at school are closely tied to greater student engagement, motivation, belonging, and academic success.

A relationship with a teacher can become a bridge to opportunities a student might never have considered.

On World Teachers’ Day, we’re celebrating the educators who make those relationships possible — who take the time to know students as learners and as people, and who help every young person feel seen, known, and valued.

What if a math grade told us less than we think?

Nearly half of the nation’s 12th graders aren’t reaching a basic level of math achievement. The Nation’s Report Card also shows the gap widening between the highest and lowest scorers.

A course grade doesn’t always reveal which concepts a student understands and which ones need more work. That’s the problem we’re taking on with Math Badging: recognizing mastery as students demonstrate it, one set of skills at a time.

What if high school gave you room to become more than one version of yourself?

For Anna Blackwell, it did.

At high school, Anna could build an underwater robot, play jazz, write poetry, and explore engineering—all without leaving any part of herself at the door.

That freedom to pursue different interests led Anna and her teammates to an international robotics competition, where they competed against some of the world’s strongest young roboticists.

Today, Anna is studying engineering at East Tennessee State University. But her high school experience gave her more than a path into engineering. It gave her the confidence to bring her curiosity, creativity, and ambition with her.

“I’m proud of who I am and what I’ve achieved, and I’m ready for the world and what it’s going to bring.”

High school can be more than preparation for what comes next. It can be where students discover the many ways they can contribute, create, and lead.

Ask Principal Jon Minton what makes him most proud of Elizabethton High School, and he doesn’t point to a ranking or a statistic.

He talks about his students, his teachers. and his classrooms.

The moments when students are solving real problems. Working through challenges together. Taking ownership of what they’re learning.

He calls it authentic learning. Picture a junior in a flight simulator, running a pre-flight checklist like the plane's really about to take off — no script, just the controls and the choice to get it right.

That's happening across EHS in different forms: students pitching solutions to real businesses in their community, classes uncovering the truth in real cold cases with law enforcement. Different subject, same stakes — real work, real growth.

As Principal Minton says, “I want our students to feel empowered, and have a level of confidence that they can step into the world and take on a challenge.”

That’s a future every student deserves.

The summer before starting ninth grade at South Bronx Community Charter High School, Sophia Romero was nervous about the math ahead — she'd always struggled with "all the Xs and Ys." Then she walked into Summer Sparks, a program from XQ and NYC FIRST, and started learning algebra by programming a robot instead.

Sophia's team used algebraic formulas to set their robot's speed — and when they ran the numbers, the answer wasn't something to check against a textbook. It was how fast her robot was about to move across the floor in front of her.

"Sometimes I can see how the numbers are connected, but sometimes that pattern feels hidden," Sophia said. "When it's really difficult, I ask my teacher, or my friends."

That's the real lesson: math makes more sense — and feels less lonely — when you build something real with it, together.

When visitors come to High School, Rachel Wagner wants students—not the adults—to drive the conversation.

As Director of Community Partnerships, Rachel helps connect classrooms with local businesses, organizations, nonprofits, and colleges. But when it’s time to share what that work looks like, students take the lead.

They guide visitors through downtown, sharing their thoughts on how to improve it . They identify the problems they want to address in their community. They introduce the programs they’re building inside the school. Adults are there to support them, but the story belongs to the students.

Rachel believes young people shouldn’t have to wait until graduation to make a difference in their community. They’re already shaping it.
