Join us this MLK Day as we come together to build a Beloved Community through unity, service, and transformation. Let's honor Dr. King's legacy by working toward a more just and equitable society, where everyone is valued and respected, regardless of their race, ability, religion, or background. By participating in service projects, we can bridge divides, heal wounds, and create lasting change that will benefit our communities for years to come.

Service for Peace has partnered with Oakland Public Works to lead this annually in Oakland since 2003, engaging thousands of volunteers in projects to clean and green Oakland. This year over 40 projects are planned all around the city.

When: Monday, Jan 20th

What to bring:

Volunteers are asked to bring water, and wear sturdy shoes and weather-appropriate gear.
MLK Day is a rain or shine event.
Bring gloves
Three projects:
Morcom Rose Garden, 10AM to 2PM Great for Families, very safe: 700 Jean St, Oakland, CA 94610
Lake Merritt 9am to 3pm, We meet at the Lakeside Park Garden Center
666 Bellevue Av. Oakland
Shepherds Canyon (9am-12pm)

There will be snacks provided, but always good to have your own dietary snacks

Bay Area Family Church Youth Ministry, part of SFP project of YSP, joined Council-member Noel Gallo 2/26/2022 in cleaning up the streets of Oakland. Youth received guidance about the impact we can make through service: to the community, people around us, and impact within ourselves. As well we talked about the importance of having a good intentional attitude when doing service. Everyone went out with an attitude they chose to focus on (gratitude, thoughtful, smile, be happy, be positive…) and an action step to practice their intentional attitude they wrote down on a wrist band to remind them throughout the project.

“My takeaway was learning about the heart of serving and the importance of having a good attitude/energy. I want to work on having a positive, loving energy for everything I do, especially serving. “ - Youth Participant

CARP college students, part of Service for Peace Bay Area, a project of Youth & Students for Peace (YSP), joined in the High Street Coalition Garden Day Transforming the area that has been seen as a dump through rooting out the weeds and bushes in order to then prepare the space to garden.

We had countless service projects on MLK day around the city of Oakland from picking up trash, weeding, and garden restoration, to senior home clean up 🧹

Joining hand in hand to beauty our community with high spirits making it a day on and not a day off!!
