Potato needs a home that can provide him training & the active lifestyle he deserves!
*Potato is about 20 months old. He is a gorgeous Mastiff mix who weighs about a ton, and has a head as big as his heart. Potato is extremely strong, and is not currently accustomed to walking on leash. He also has no idea how big he is.
His previous owner was unhoused. Potato was picked up by animal control with a life threatening medical condition last fall. His owner at the time was committed to assisting with and seeing Potato through his recovery process, but ultimately did not follow through on anything needed to obtain funding for Potato’s care and abandoned Potato. With the owner ghosting, this also meant PALS became fully responsible for all of the costs of his care, which included a very expensive surgery at our private vet. HUGE thanks to OAS for stepping in and covering a portion of his surgery - they are the only agency that honored their funding commitment after the owner bailed & we are extremely grateful to them for that & providing his initial life saving care.
Potato needs a permanent home. The very best home. He is a wonderful dog who very much wants to please. He lacks training but is definitely trainable. He previously got along well with all dogs (a benefit of being raised in an encampment) and has gotten along well with the dogs and cats at his foster’s. *these are extremely dog savvy cats with a lot of dog experience & does not imply that every cat will be a good fit*
Potato had a few setbacks - he had an extremely complicated procedure - but is not expected to have any ongoing issues related to his medical history. His entire history will be disclosed to anyone who is seriously interested in adoption. This means you’ve emailed with interest, description of your current situation and experience with training large breed dogs, experience preferably with mastiff’s / mixes. We want an idea of what kind of life you’d be able to provide Potato. We don’t have anything to hide, just not looking to put it all out there on blast exactly.
I also want to be crystal clear, that in 11 years of providing assistance to the unhoused, this is only the second time - out of thousands of cases - that PALS have had to take control of a pet, not by choice, and eventually find a new home for them. Please withhold any negative opinions or comments you might have about the unhoused or their ability to care for pets. This is not the time, place or post for that & will result in you getting blocked from commenting going forward.
If interested, please send an email to [email protected] with all of the info requested above: Describe current living situation, including how many people are living in the home and would be interacting with / working with Potato, other animals in the home including their personalities etc, and your experience & skill level at training / working with giant headed dogs. Tell us what his days will look like. He is a very goofy, lovable bulldozer that truly wants to please but he gets mouthy when excited & forgets any manners he might have had for five minutes. We can’t consider homes with small children, he’d flatten a kid just being his goofy self - I’m routinely covered in “Potato Glitter” (aka bruises.)
Please like, share on socials or directly with anyone whom you think could be a good fit for Potato 🙏🏼
*Potato is the name he has been called for the past year, not his owner given name. I mean come on, he really looked like a Potato especially as a baby & yes, I have known him since he was a baby.
