East Bay Meditation Center

East Bay Meditation Center Our mission is to foster liberation, personal and interpersonal healing, social action, and inclusivity. We do this in two ways:

1.

The East Bay Meditation Center (EBMC) is an independent center located in downtown Oakland, at 285 17th Street at Harrison, just 3 blocks from the 19th Street BART station. We offer meditation training and spiritual teachings from Buddhist and other wisdom traditions, with attention to social action, multiculturalism, and the diverse populations of the East Bay and beyond. A detailed profile of EB

MC appears on the website of the World Religions and Spirituality Project of Virginia Commonwealth University. Our programs include meditation classes, daylong retreats, sitting groups, workshops, and classes. EBMC seeks to offer its programs to the widest possible audience. Some of our programs are specifically for People of Color, or the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer, Questioning, Intersex & Same-Gender Loving Communities. This provides a safe space for individuals who daily confront the effects of oppression, racism, or homophobia and heterosexism in their lives, and who therefore may choose to initially avoid mixed programs.

2. We offer all of our programs for no registration fee or cost to the participant (except fundraising programs). Instead, we invite all program participants to make voluntary gifts at the end of each event, to the level of their ability, for the teacher(s) of the event and to the East Bay Meditation Center. This allows us to offer our programs to all individuals, independent of economic means. Traditionally, this is known as the practice of "Dana" or Generosity, and is a part of many spiritual traditions. Dana:

Dana is the ancient Pali language word describing generosity arising effortlessly from deep gratitude. It is the first of the perfections (paramis or paramitas, virtues necessary for awakening) in both Theravada and Mahayana Buddhism. In Southeast Asia, the practice of dana, or generosity, is taught before the practice of meditation. At EBMC, we seek to make the practice of Dana an individual and a collective social practice. By making individual voluntary gifts to support the teachers and the center, practitioners develop their generosity, which contributes to their spiritual awakening. By relying on the generosity of our community to sustain the center and its teachers, we create a community in which generosity becomes a social force. Teachers:

EBMC teachers and workshop leaders are either members of the EBMC Teacher Sangha (the word “sangha” means community of spiritual practitioners), or visiting teachers. Collaborations:

The EBMC collaborates with, but has no formal affiliation with, other meditation centers in the Bay Area and beyond. Fragrance-Free Policy:

Out of respect for people with environmental illnesses, we request that everyone attending EBMC please not wear fragrance or scented products when attending events at EBMC. This includes clothing that has been laundered with fragranced detergent or softening products. We greatly appreciate your efforts to make EBMC accessible to those with MCS (Multiple Chemical Sensitivities). Please view our list of fragrance-free products and related resources that can assist you in keeping EBMC fragrance-free. The East Bay Meditation Center is wheelchair accessible.

August 19th! Come to “Cinema As Prayer: A Night of Q***r South Asian Cinema” at the Rialto Cinema Rialto Cinemas Elmwood to see two powerful short films and a Q&A with the creators! EBMC is honored to be a Community Partner for this event.

Blending poetry, memoir-style reflection and prayer, PARAMITA bears witness to Pajna Choudhury’s 25-year coming out process with her traditional Bangladeshi mother. Told with intimacy, tenderness and a quiet power, PARAMITA invites us into a meditative spiritual experience as Prajna connects with Buddhist practices and nature as gateways for intergenerational healing.

Kirthi Nath Kirthi Nath (director, editor, producer) is a South Asian American le***an filmmaker who believes that if we want to change our culture, we have to change our stories. This also includes how we tell our stories and who tells it. Over the past 20+ years, Kirthi has established a body of creative work that fluidly straddles genres, occupying a fertile landscape of cultural poetics, intersectional storytelling, social justice and spirituality; Her creative practice roots from a foundation of collaboration, uplifting marginalized voices and art as activism, and actively engages the living question, ‘What does decolonized, women of color, feminist storytelling look like?’ Kirthi’s work has been featured nationwide and locally at numerous festivals and commissioned projects. Kirthi has been awarded CAAM Social Doc Fund, CCI Investing in Arts, V-Day media grant, and was part of the inaugural RePresent Media RETAKE BIPOC Film Fellowship, and is a proud member of BGDM, Bitchitra Collective and A-Doc. Kirthi lives in Oakland with her beloved partner and daughter. Kirthi is the founder and lead filmmaker at Cinemagical Media.

Hey sangha fam! If you haven’t applied for our Commit 2 Dharma yearlong program yet, you’re in luck - the deadline has been extended to next Monday August 3rd!!

The time to deepen your practice and build a supportive community is now. Our world needs us to show up with a grounding in dharma and mindfulness. The personal practice that we cultivate in the program will be beneficial for our own journeys and the journeys of others.

Our teaching team of Patrick Brown, Dawn Haney, and René Rivera tell us about their experience in C2D: “The relationships we forged, the practices we established, and the dharma wisdom we developed continue to support us in our community leadership and teaching.”

Will you join us in this sacred lineage?

All are welcome to apply, although this is not a program intended for beginners on the path. We particularly encourage EBMC sangha members and members of the q***r, BIPOC, and disabled or chronically ill communities to apply.

Find more info and the application link in our bio! (note that all meetings are in-person only)

🪷🎬 EBMC is excited to be a community partner for Cinema as Prayer: A Night of Q***r South Asian Films, a special one-night-only film event featuring PARAMITA by Kirthi Nath and Longing Suite by Lata Mani and Nicolás Grandi!

These two poetic films move through longing, belonging and spiritual transformation, opening a space for reflection, healing and connection.

PARAMITA bears witness to Prajna Choudhury’s 25-year journey of coming out to her traditional Bangladeshi mother. Told with intimacy and tenderness, the film invites us into a meditative experience as Prajna connects with Buddhist practice and nature as gateways for intergenerational healing.

Longing Suite is a lyrical exploration of awakening to the feminine Divine. Building on a cycle of poems written by Mani in the 1990s, the film traces the arc of a heart-mind-body awakening to the sacred in all that exists.

Together, these intimate, spiritual films invite us to experience cinema as prayer.

The screening will be followed by a conversation and Q&A with the filmmakers, moderated by Madeleine Lim, Executive and Artistic Director of QWOCMAP (Q***r Women of Color Media Arts Project).

We hope you can join us—get your tickets today!

Hi fam, Kristal here - sheesh we had a lot of fun last week! On Wednesday EBMC was invited to be a Community Partner with Bay Area Book Festival for the event “No More Normal: Radical Healing in a Hurting World”! The talk featured Dr Gabor Maté, social worker Nicole Steward, and moderator Jeff Chang! Hosted at The New Parkway Theater (one of my favorite spots in Oakland).

It was a sold-out house AND we had an online audience - sooo much good energy!! I was joined by legendary EBMC teachers Arisika Razak, Renato Almanzor (also chair of our board), and Melvin Escobar. We had a great time sharing about EBMC, providing an opening grounding practice, and meeting new and old friends.

The discussion around personal and collective healing really resonated with us. As Nicole said, the “self” in self care does not mean “solo”. We need others to support us in taking care of ourselves. This is not work that has to be done in isolation. And when we do engage in self-care work, others benefit from it as well. EBMC is a safe place where we can practice caring for ourselves and also receive community support. All are invited to do this with us! ❤️‍🩹🌈🪷

Thanks to all who showed up and to our hosts (shoutout J.K. Fowler and Nomadic Bookshop!) for inviting us to be part of this awesome event 🙏🏾

Donate to EBMC to help us sustain our programs and keep them accessible to everyone! https://bit.ly/ebmc-give (link also in bio) 🌷🌷🌷
