This past Saturday, our Khadafy Washington Project (KWP) team brought together our KWP and Circle of Care families for our annual summer picnic, a day filled with good food, games, dancing, laughter, and, most importantly, community.
For families who have experienced the devastating loss of a loved one to homicide, healing doesn’t happen on a timeline, and support doesn’t end after the immediate crisis. KWP walks alongside families through grief and beyond, and gatherings like this create space for people who understand one another’s experiences to connect, celebrate, and simply enjoy being together.
As one participant shared, “It meant a lot to be surrounded by people who understand my pain. I truly appreciate the continuous love and support that you all always show us.”
This year, families enjoyed an incredible taco bar from Takobar Catering, games and activities, raffle prizes, a very popular chalk maze, and plenty of dancing, including a group Cha-Cha Slide! One participant summed it up beautifully: “I just love my Circle of Care family.”
A huge thank you to our KWP team for creating another meaningful day for our families, with a special shoutout to Lanisha and Gloria for bringing so much care, flexibility, and joy to everything they do.
Healing can look like many things. Sometimes, it looks like a community coming together on a summer afternoon to eat, dance, laugh, and remind one another: you are not alone. 🩷
