Baywell Health Community

Baywell Health Community West Oakland Health is now Baywell Health. Serving The Bay’s Health, Heart, and Soul
Historically Black medical, mental, dental health, and more.

HISTORY AND SERVICES
In the late 1960’s federal funding became available to provide primary care services in medically underserved areas throughout the United States. West Oakland, a largely African American community, lacked affordable, accessible, culturally responsive and high quality health care services. Many residents were unable to afford care from nearby private medical practices and were

forced to seek care at the county hospital, often requiring long waiting times for appointments and difficulty accessing services by public transit. Community activists, organized and supported by our founders, four dedicated West Oakland African American women, established the West Oakland Health Council in 1967 to receive public funding, and to build and staff the West Oakland Health Center. Funding was received and services were initiated in 1969 at 700 Adeline Street. In subsequent years, as additional funding became available, the Council expanded to seven facilities serving West/North Oakland, East Oakland, Emeryville and Berkeley. We have proudly served generations of people and families for nearly six decades, extending far beyond our South Berkeley, West, and East Oakland areas. As our patients have resettled outside Oakland and Berkeley to places across the Bay Area, so must we. In keeping with our vision and honoring the legacy of our founders, in June 2024, The West Oakland Health Council launched a rebrand and name change to become Baywell Health. Our rebrand is not a change in ownership or management. We are not being acquired; we are growing to meet our communities' needs better. Our staff, comprehensive services, and convenient locations remain the same. What to expect:

A renewed focus on our purpose: To be the trusted hub advancing the Bay Area Black community's health and dignity. Improved services and programs at our same locations: Tailored to meet the specific needs of our community’s diversity. Stronger partnerships: We value your partnership and mutual commitment to our community and look forward to new shared opportunities to improve our community’s health. We are excited about this new chapter in our journey and the opportunity to continue serving you and your loved ones. Stay tuned for upcoming events and announcements as we celebrate this transformation. Our services include primary medical care (general medicine, gynecology and reproductive health, and pediatrics), dentistry, optometry, behavioral health care for adults and children, Medication Assisted Treatment services, and ancillary support - including pharmacy, laboratory, health education, and the W.I.C. nutritional supplement program. We a re Patient-Centered Medical Home and Accreditation by Joint Commission.

On July 5, 1852, Frederick Douglass stood before a crowd in Rochester and asked: "What, to the American slave, is your Fourth of July?"

He answered with honesty — our celebration shows the gap between what America promises and what it practices. But Douglass didn’t end in despair. He ended with resolve: the promise of the Declaration is worth fighting to make it real for everyone.

174 years later, we hold both truths in West and East Oakland. We celebrate our families, our cookouts, our joy — and we keep working. Because independence isn't finished until it includes the freedom to be healthy. To live long. To have someone care for you who sees you.

That's the work. That's Baywell Health.

Baywell Health stands on the shoulders of generations of Black mamas who kept showing up for freedom and liberation. This Juneteenth, we thank our four founding mothers who created Baywell Health so Black people in the Bay would have a health care center that feels like home. 60 years later, we are still here, bringing the legacy of Juneteenth and our founding mothers to every patient who walks through our doors.

Rooted in culture and community, we provide holistic care by listening to your needs and taking you seriously from the start. A health clinic created by us, for us.

Baywell Health has been rooted in the Bay since our founding. This AAPI Heritage Month, we're honoring our Asian-Black Racial Healing Research Project — a collaboration that brings our two communities together to do work that doesn't get done anywhere else. Together, we hold real conversations about mental health, racism, and the healing — personal and collective — that our communities deserve. Learn more about the work at baywellhealth.org.

Diabetes hits our community hard — but we don't have to face it alone. Research shows 1 in 3 U.S. adults could have diabetes by 2050 — and our community is at higher risk. The way we beat it is side by side — providers and patients, neighbors and neighbors.

At Baywell Health, everything you need is under one roof — glucose monitoring, prescriptions, nutrition support, and patient groups where you’re known by name.

We're here to care for your whole self — because that’s how healthcare should feel. Call (510) 835-9610 or visit baywellhealth.org

Baywell Health is one of just eight organizations chosen across California for the California Health Care Foundation’s Pulse of Change initiative — a recognition of the work our four mothers started here in 1966, and we carry forward every day. Right here in the Bay, that means more ways to prevent and manage diabetes, high blood pressure, and the conditions that hit our community hardest.

We come to you with home visits, transportation support, food from our pantry, and care teams who help you stay on top of follow-ups — because healthcare should feel like home. Grab an appointment with us today to get started!

At Baywell Health, every day is Mother’s Day.

We show up for you the way our founding mothers showed up over 60 years ago—demanding better care for the Bay Area’s Black community and building a health center to deliver it. Their vision still guides us.

They would be proud of what their home has become: medical, dental, optometry, pharmacy, mental health, and food pantry services, all under one roof.
We’re here to listen. We’re here to care. For you and for your family.
