Sacred Roots, Oakland VISION

Sacred Roots seeks to center people of color - Black, Indigenous, API, immigrants, queer, and womxn - in our pursuit of shared healing and liberation.

We are a collective of seasoned BIPOC movement healers, culture workers, and wisdom keepers of Indigenous traditions from the Global Majority who create reciprocal, intergenerational spaces for healing, learning, and connection. We are a Black, Indigenous, Women of Color-led grassroots project, fiscally sponsored by Canticle Farm, in the village of Huichin, the ancestral territory of the Chochenyo Ohlone people. We cultivate our collective wellness through cultural healing practices and embodied learning. VALUES

Cultural Wisdom - We offer a liberatory learning and healing pedagogy, rooted in Black, Indigenous, API, and People of Color communities and practices. Power With - We believe that the wisdom of those most impacted by the systems of oppression must inform the “what” and the “how” of social transformation. Interconnected - We believe in and nurture the sacred presence and connections between all living beings. OFFERINGS

We offer embodied community-based learning & healing through a collective table of medicine that is both relational and proximal to those most impacted. Street Academy: facilitates embodied and experiential healing-based anti-oppression learning circles, grounded in our interconnectedness and relational proximity with beloved street scholars, healers, organizers, and activists in our communities. We believe that the wisdom of those most impacted by the systems of oppression must inform the “what” and the “how” of social transformation. We offer seminars, workshops, and retreats of varying lengths.

- Relearning truthful history
- Reconnecting with our traditions and cultures - healing what was
broken, the transmission of the medicine from one generation to
the next
- Recovering traditional, ancestral, and holistic healing tools while
transforming systems of oppression

Justice Sanctuary: offers medicine of various healing modalities, rooted in BIPOC cultural wisdom and practices. Our BIPOC practitioners are trained in energy work, spiritual accompaniment, acupuncture, herbalism, astrology, numerology, somatic coaching, poetry as medicine facilitation, doulaship, and counseling.

- We see wellness as a balancing of the four quadrants of the
individual's healing basket - physical, mental, emotional, and
spiritual
- By resourcing individuals in the movement and those most
impacted by trauma and oppression with wellness tools, we
strengthen our collective capacity, resilience, and effectiveness
in our struggle for liberation

This August, we had the deep honor of walking alongside elders from Asian Health Services through a month of remembering, creating, and visioning — beautifully captured by our collaborator Katie Quan at REALSOUL.

Through journaling, clay, and story, these elders traced their journeys from homeland to Oakland Chinatown — many touching clay for the first time and discovering a joy and expressiveness they didn’t know they carried.

At the closing celebration, they shared what moved them most: how surprised they were by their own capability, a deepened appreciation for cultures and traditions beyond their own, a richer understanding of young people today, and a shared vision to help cultivate more spaces like this throughout Oakland.

We are so grateful to Katie Quan and REALSOUL for holding this process with such tenderness, and to every elder who trusted us with their journey. This is what healing justice looks like — intergenerational, embodied, and rooted in community.

It was such an honor to visit Foodie Doula (Teyler Wallace) — a postpartum doula, postpartum chef, and lactation educator — for a cross-cultural exchange between our Chinese elders and Teyler on healing food and postpartum care traditions. What struck us most was the overlap — different cultures, generations, and lineages, yet so much shared wisdom about food as medicine. Grateful for the exchange and all we learned from each other.

Last week, Sacred Roots invited Chinese elders from Asian Health Services to learn alongside , exploring Curanderismo — a sacred Indigenous healing tradition carried by curanderas/os, using herbs, ritual cleansing, and spiritual practice to restore balance in body, mind, and spirit.

What moved us most was the exchange between our Chinese elders and the curanderas — stories shared over herbal medicine, each tradition naming the plants and remedies passed down through their lineages. So many beautiful parallels surfaced, and so much new learning too — a reminder that across oceans and generations, our ancestors have long understood how to tend the body, the spirit, and each other.

We build community by rooting together — deepening our shared medicine, weaving our ceremonies, and remembering that healing traditions across cultures have always been in conversation. Alongside this exchange, our community received herbal foot soaks, personalized herbal blends, and potli and pinda bundles.

Grateful for this collaboration and for every elder, healer, and community member who showed up to share and receive.

We are so honored to have opened the Oakland Youth Power Hub with sacred blessing ceremonies. Our beloved elders, Maestra Patricia Chicueyl Coatl from and Iya Wanda Ravernell-Stewart from carried ancestral medicine into the space — cleansing, consecrating, and calling in protection for our future ancestors as they do the vital work of personal and collective transformation.

Movements are sustained when elders stand with and behind the youth, blessing the path they are forging. We are encouraged and inspired to see the youth leading the way. 🌱🔥

, , , and are beloved community and allies in this work — and we celebrate the labor, vision, and love poured into bringing this hub to life. A dedicated space where youth organizers have the resources and infrastructure to sustain the power they're building. Come visit, come witness, come be part of what's growing here. ✨

When elders and youth meet

Cantonese-speaking immigrant elders and Latinx students from Castlemont High School came together for an afternoon of living culture — visiting the Civic Design Studio's farm, art space, and design studio, sharing food across traditions, and teaching each other words in Cantonese, Spanish, and Mam. Then the elders led them in Tai Chi and dance.

Three languages. Multiple lineages. Building community together

This is what elder joy looks like!

Last month, Sacred Roots helped to organize a cultural exchange between Cantonese-speaking immigrant elders from Asian Health Services and Cambodian elders from Center for Empowering Refugees and Immigrants. The elders gathered in the spirit of ancestral joy — dancing, singing karaoke in Khmer and Cantonese, and sharing the medicines of our cultural foods and migration story.

We are grateful to hold space where our elders are seen, celebrated, and in full bloom. 🙏🏽

Rest is sacred.

Street Level Health Project has been Oakland's "safety net of the safety net" since 2002 — showing up daily for uninsured immigrants, day laborers, and those the system leaves behind. This May, we had the honor of turning that care around and pouring it back into them.

We spent a half-day in deep rest and renewal together:

1:1 bodywork by a fabulous team of healers, offering TCM acupuncture and bodywork rooted in healing traditions from across cultures.

A traditional Lakota lunch made by our beloved auntie Martha Martinez

A group limpia beautifully held by Maestra Lidia Ruelo-Salazar, releasing the weight of collective trauma and grief, and remembering together the resilience and medicine within.

Deep gratitude to the SLHP family for trusting us to hold this space. Big shout out to the incredible kickass healer collaborators!

Last month, 25 staff from 10 Bay Area social justice organizations gathered for a 1.5-day immersive training rooted in healing justice, ancestral wisdom, and conflict transformation.
We explored what it means to build organizations that not just survive conflict but grow through it. Together, we practiced conflict literacy, somatic regulation, navigating difference, and how to bring ritual and care into the everyday culture of our orgs.

Much love and gratitude to the fabulous facilitation team: Laura Yei Cuauhtli, Angela Kim, Spearitwurx, Yu-Shuan Tarango-Sho.

Shoutout to every participant who showed up as their full selves and with honesty about what their organizations are navigating. So much thanks to Pui-Ling Lew for the healing foods and Community Works for the beautiful space!! And to the San Francisco Foundation for making this container possible.
