Oakland Youth Vote

Oakland Youth Vote Measure QQ will give 16 and 17 year-olds in Oakland the right to vote in school board elections!

05/07/2026

Now that youth in Oakland can vote, they have the power to set their own agenda and make their own demands.

Our Executive Director, Lukas Brekke-Miesner, recently joined Dr. Saleem Gilmore on “Real Talk About the Town” to discuss the significance of the Oakland Youth Vote.
What does it mean for young people, especially those from marginalized communities, to hold this power? How can they hold elected officials accountable? As Lukas puts it, the ability to vote transforms the dynamic between school board members and current students. Now youth have the ability to say, “You want my vote? Here are our demands and what we want to achieve for our future.”
Tune in to the full conversation to explore how the youth vote is reshaping Oakland’s political landscape.

I’m unhoused. Can I vote?

All eligible voters have the right to vote, including a person who is experiencing homelessness. You may register to vote as long as you have a location where you can receive mail and be properly assigned to a voting precinct. Call or visit your county elections office to register to vote. You may register to vote at an address where you spend most of your time, such as a shelter. If you have a driver’s license or state identification, you can easily register at registertovote.ca.gov. Exciting news! We’ve just released our evaluation report on the first-ever Oakland Youth Vote election.

Back in 2020, we celebrated a huge victory for Oakland youth with the passage of Measure QQ, allowing 16 and 17-year-olds to vote in school board elections. After four years overcoming challenges to see implementation through, young people were finally able to cast their votes in the 2024 elections!

But our work isn’t done. It’s not enough that young people can vote; we need to ensure voting is accessible, easy, and a tool for building real youth power.

That’s why we’ve conducted a deep dive to learn from and improve our systems. If you’re interested in our findings and recommendations to improve youth voting systems, download the full report at the link in our bio.

Historic turnouts in Oakland and Berkeley show that students aren’t just the leaders of tomorrow—they are leading right now. Despite technical hurdles and systemic barriers, hundreds of young voters cast ballots for school board seats to shape the future of their education.

From classrooms to the polls, the culture is shifting. Voting isn’t just “old people stuff”; it’s a powerful tool for real-world advocacy. 🚀
