Your vote, your voice. 🗳️ But you can’t use it if you’re not registered! October 19 is the LAST day to register online, so don’t wait. If you miss the October 19 deadline, you can still register and vote in person using same-day registration. Find a vote center near your high school at the link in bio.

Once you’re set, mark your calendar:
📅 October 24: Early in-person voting begins
📅 October 27: Last recommended day to mail your ballot
📅 November 3: Election Day, the final day to vote and return your ballot

It was great to see some of yall at last week’s PTSA candidate forum at Skyline High School (Oakland) and this week’s The Oaklandside Candidate Forum at Oakland High School 🐾. It’s been particularly awesome to witness youth voters take up space to vet D2, D4, and D6 candidates on the issues that matter to them!

If you have yet to register to vote, please do so by October 19th to make sure you receive your ballot in the mail. If you miss that deadline, or turn 16 between then and November 3rd, you can register and vote same day at any Alameda County Vote Center.

Last year, 16 and 17 year-olds could only vote by mail, but thanks to the Oakland Youth Vote Coalition’s ongoing advocacy, youth have parity with adult voters this election! Please register to vote, vet candidates in your district, and make a plan to vote this election!!

For the past three school board elections, the Oakland Youth Vote Coalition has hosted student-led candidate forums to vet candidates around student concerns. This year, the reach of our civic engagement curriculum continues to grow and more and more groups are hosting candidate forums, expanding opportunities for youth and community to engage prospective School Board members.

Instead of hosting yet another forum, we’re opting to mobilize youth to the above upcoming opportunities to hear from the candidates. As we inventoried the events, we decided to promote these opportunities so that all community members can turn out to one or more. Some of the hosts of these events are non-partisan groups and some endorse candidates, so we advise you to do your homework on any angle or affiliation hosts may have.

Now that youth in Oakland can vote, they have the power to set their own agenda and make their own demands.

Our Executive Director, Lukas Brekke-Miesner, recently joined Dr. Saleem Gilmore on “Real Talk About the Town” to discuss the significance of the Oakland Youth Vote.
What does it mean for young people, especially those from marginalized communities, to hold this power? How can they hold elected officials accountable? As Lukas puts it, the ability to vote transforms the dynamic between school board members and current students. Now youth have the ability to say, “You want my vote? Here are our demands and what we want to achieve for our future.”

I’m unhoused. Can I vote?

All eligible voters have the right to vote, including a person who is experiencing homelessness. You may register to vote as long as you have a location where you can receive mail and be properly assigned to a voting precinct. Call or visit your county elections office to register to vote. You may register to vote at an address where you spend most of your time, such as a shelter. If you have a driver’s license or state identification, you can easily register at registertovote.ca.gov.
