Our mission is cats. Together, we save the lives of at-risk cats, find them loving homes, and advocate for a future where every cat is valued. Cat Town made history by opening America’s first cat cafe in 2014, right here in Oakland. In doing so, we created a new platform to meet elderly, frightened, stressed, sick, and injured cats — a place where adopters could meet them at their best: stress-fre

e, healthy, and ready for love. About half of our cats reside at our Adoption Center until they get adopted. The rest of our cats live in foster homes around the East Bay or in our kitten adoption space at Pet Food Express in Rockridge. Our approach to cat rescue proves these overlooked cats are highly adoptable, and has been shared with other rescues across the country, helping transform what's possible for vulnerable cats. We're grateful to be able to collaborate with other cat rescues around the Bay Area.

One-year-old Ivie arrived at Contra Costa Animal Services sick, pregnant, and shut down. The Cat Garden Rescue brought her out of the scary shelter and into their foster program, and treated her Feline Infectious Peritonitis, a historically fatal virus until medical breakthroughs and treatments became legalized in 2024.

From there, Ivie came into Cat Town’s care, where she got full mouth extractions for her gingivostomatitis, and a special diet to help her gain weight. She also received an enucleation for a severely injured eye to relieve her of that discomfort.

Ivie acclimated to the Adoption Center quickly and her affectionate and confident self shone. She also found a best friend — a shy girl named Natasha — and together, these cats charmed adopters who excitedly brought them into their family.

Handsome Jonas and Austin are looking for a calm home where they can continue growing into the affectionate companions they’re meant to be. Both one-year-olds start off shy, which makes it extra-rewarding to patiently watch their trust blossom day by day.

Jonas is the more playful of the pair. He loves wand toys, treats, and lap time. Although initially quite timid, he transforms into a loving companion who enjoys being part of the action and spending time with people.

Austin may hide briefly when he's feeling nervous, but once he settles in, he's affectionate, playful, and a truly wonderful friend. He enjoys lounging by the window and pouncing his favorite toys. Austin also has FIV, so will need to stay inside, but fear not: cats with FIV can live long, happy lives with routine veterinary care, and can live safely alongside cats without FIV.

These charming, playful boys are looking for a patient adopter and a peaceful environment where they can continue to thrive together. Give them a bit of extra time to settle in and they’ll form a deep bond you’ll cherish. Let us know you’d like to meet them: https://bit.ly/cattownadoptioninquiry

Seymour is the kind of cat who makes himself at home in your heart almost as quickly as he makes himself at home on your couch. This affectionate senior gentleman is friendly with new people and looking for a loving adopter who’s ready to welcome a devoted companion into their daily life.

Over time, you’ll discover that Seymour is equal parts charming greeter, cuddle buddy, and playmate. He loves being near his people and has a special fondness for forehead massages, which he’ll happily remind you about each evening. While he’s not much for being picked up, he adores gentle petting and will rub against your legs or settle beside you on the sofa for attention. He may even spend the night sleeping next to you.

This spry senior still enjoys a good play session — Seymour loves stalking toy mice, pouncing on balls, and chasing wand toys before settling in for a cozy evening with his people. He is currently taking medication for a possible arthritis issue, which he handles well, and would thrive in a calm, indoor-only home.

If you're looking for a steady, affectionate companion with great manners and plenty of personality, Seymour may be the perfect match. Let us know you’d like to meet him at the link in bio. https://bit.ly/cattownadoptioninquiry

Miku had been found at the airport and brought to the city shelter scared and shut down. She hissed and swatted at volunteers, but sometimes came out for pets when treats were around, purring and showing her affectionate side.

At our Adoption Center, her confidence blossomed. She loved pets and would energetically play with other cats, sometimes causing a little too much mischief with the cats around her. We brought her into a studio with a cat friend who helped her feel safer and calm.

This adorable little girl was adopted by a cat-savvy family who love her dearly, and tell us: “It's been wonderful watching her confidence grow. She's becoming more curious, more relaxed, and more present with us every day. We can really see her personality shining through. Thank you for helping bring her into our lives. We love her so much!”

Falcon is a shy, sensitive presence who’s still learning that people can be safe. This young cat came to Oakland Animal Services injured and fearful after life in a home crowded with other cats.

Beneath Falcon’s cautious exterior is a playful companion who wants connection, even if he’s still figuring out how to ask for it. Over time, you’ll discover he’s a thoughtful little friend who feels most comfortable in calm, predictable spaces. He enjoys settling near the people and cats he trusts, and would especially benefit from a confident feline companion to help him feel secure.

Falcon is also a happy, quirky, playful little guy — our staff lovingly calls him a “good egg” who gets along with all the other cats. He’s known for approaching his feline friends for head bumps and lifting his happy tail high in the air as he walks toward you, asking for pets.

Because Falcon can become startled easily and may swat if approached too quickly, respecting his boundaries and allowing him to move at his own pace goes a long way toward helping him relax and feel safe.

This sweet, sensitive boy is looking for a patient, cat-savvy adopter who’ll give him the time and understanding he needs to continue building confidence. He could be a wonderful match for someone with a young, playful cat who’s looking for a friend. He’ll thrive in a calm, indoor-only home without dogs, with adopters who understand shy cats and appreciate the quiet reward of watching trust slowly bloom.

Does Falcon sound like your kind of companion? Let us know at the link in bio. https://bit.ly/cattownadoptioninquiry

Looking for an excuse to spend more time with cats this month? Whether your idea of self-care involves a yoga mat or a sketchbook, we have you covered!

On June 9, join us for Calm Cats & Yoga Mats, an all-levels yoga class led by Parul (they/them). Their fun, grounding vinyasa practice begins with breathwork and builds into movements tailored to your experience level — all in the company of some excellent feline yoga buddies.

Then on June 17, bring a sketchbook and join us for Paw N’ Draw, a relaxed evening of art, cats, and community. You'll have the chance to sketch our cats as they lounge, play, and occasionally investigate your work. We'll provide basic art supplies and professional guidance from local artist Chad White.

Both events tend to fill quickly, and our cats would love the company. Learn more, reserve your spot, and make some time for yourself: cattownoakland.org/reservations

Last spring, a frightened senior cat was abandoned in the lobby of Rocket Dog Rescue. Gandalf was injured, sick, and clearly in need of urgent medical care. Instead of turning away from a complicated situation, the Rocket Dog Rescue team sprang into action, rushing him to VCA Animal Hospitals and placing him with a foster guardian while they worked to stabilize him.

What could have been the end of Gandalf’s story became the beginning of a remarkable recovery, thanks to a network of people who refused to let him fall through the cracks. Once he was stable, Rocket Dog reached out to for additional support, and together our teams made sure this gentle senior had the chance to heal, decompress, and finally experience the safety and comfort he deserved.

At 14 years old, Gandalf is a gentle, affectionate companion who loves laps, cozy naps, and quiet time with his people. His foster says, “if you want a binge watching or book reading buddy, he is your guy!” While he enjoys cuddles and gentle play, he’ll do best with an experienced adopter who can respect his boundaries and body language. Gandalf is FIV-positive and has manageable allergies controlled with a rabbit-only diet and daily medication, allowing him to live a long, comfortable life indoors.

Gandalf’s story shows what’s possible when our broader community comes together for a cat in need. We’re so grateful to Rocket Dog Rescue for stepping in quickly to save him and honored to help continue his journey home. If you’d like to give Gandalf the happy ending he deserves, submit an adoption inquiry today: https://bit.ly/cattownadoptioninquiry

Marshall and Lorenzo are two best friends determined to make the most of every day together!

Lorenzo, just 4 months old, is the outgoing adventurer of the pair. Friendly, confident, and endlessly curious, he’s always ready to investigate a new toy or follow his people around the house. He approaches life with enthusiasm — whether he’s batting a toy across the floor, learning a new trick for treats, or flopping over to ask for pets.

Seven-month-old Marshall is equally affectionate and enjoys soft pets and snuggling close. His easygoing nature makes hearts melt left and right, and when he’s feeling mischievous, you’ll find him in a friendly wrestling match, or instigating a game of chase with his best buddy!

Marshall and Lorenzo are almost always side by side — grooming one another, bird-watching, cuddling, and even eating together. This pair could be a wonderful match for first-time adopters or families with calm older kids. They’re looking for an indoor-only home where they can continue growing up together — and promise that together you’ll get twice the cuddles, twice the entertainment, and twice the love.

Today is the final day to become a monthly donor and have your first SIX months of donations TRIPLED — up to $15,000. Will you help us unlock lifesaving support for more cats like Denver?

When Denver arrived at Cat Town, he was sick, underweight, and struggling with multiple medical conditions. Coming from a home with too many animals, he needed immediate veterinary care, ongoing treatment, and a safe place to recover.

Today, Denver is feeling better and enjoying life — because monthly donors made it possible for us to say yes to the care he needed: dental surgery to relieve painful disease, a special diet to manage inflammatory bowel disease, medication for an autoimmune condition, and all the time and support needed to heal.

Every year, hundreds of vulnerable shelter cats come through Cat Town's doors needing medical care, behavioral support, and a second chance. Monthly donations provide the steady, reliable funding that allows us to step in for cats like Denver and give them the individualized care they deserve.

Become a monthly donor before midnight, and your impact will be tripled for six full months. Help more cats receive the comfort, treatment, and second chances that change lives.
