Our senior policy manager went on the record this week to confirm a hard-hitting truth: shopping carts in the Bay do indeed still look like shopping carts.

We had a good laugh, but the sad reality is that the Bay was a dumping ground for decades, and in some places it's still treated that way.

We're grateful for efforts to bring trash issues to light and bring about some accountability, and enforcing polluter accountability is a core part of our advocacy work with the Regional Water Quality Board.

Today marks the 10 year anniversary of Measure AA, a $12 per year parcel
tax for wetland restoration and flood control projects that was approved in
2016.

Thanks to the momentum created by Measure AA, habitat restoration
projects across the Bay Area that provide flood protection, shoreline access,
and recreational amenities projects are having a positive impact on the
Bay!

At 900 Innes in SF the installation of trails and other public access
amenities, and the restoration of a historic cottage โ€œwill reduce
pollutant loads at the site to allow for larger restoration and redevelopment,
as well as ensure the safety of future park users, visitors, construction
workers, and ecological receptors.โ€ City and County of San Francisco,
Recreation and Park Department

The Coyote Hills Restoration and Public Access Project aims to create a safe and welcoming space for visitors, restoring habitat along the Bay, and increasing public access.

These new projects are enabled by long-term Measure AA investments, including which is also funding the South Bay Salt Pond Restoration Project, the largest wetland restoration and flood protection project.

Projects like these reinforce the importance of continued investment in
shoreline resilience and is a powerful example of what this regional funding
makes possible.

Save The Bay is excited to announce Delaney Simpson as our new Restoration Nursery Specialist!

Delaney is a Southern California native who has been slowly migrating up the coast over the past few years for work.

Her love for the ocean and wetlands began as a small child and was actualized when she served a year with Ca Fish and Wildlife at the Elkhorn Slough National Estuarine Research Reserve where she spent time leading guided trail hikes, assisting environmental biologists, restoring tidal marsh, and running educational programs.

We encourage you to give her a warm welcome in the comments ๐Ÿ‘‹

๐Ÿ’– We love marsh and we love main character energy! โœจ๏ธ

The First Mile Horizontal Levee is part of a wave of โ€˜nature-basedโ€™ projects in development around the Bay. While coastal communities have long responded to flooding problems by building hard walls to keep water out, the First Mile Levee instead leans on natural materials, such as dirt and plants, to provide flood protection that works with nature rather than against it.
