Happy Friday and May Day! With the start of a new month, we have a new lineup of programming to share. Which gathering will you be joining?

Next Thursday, May 7, Oakland Geologist Andrew Alden will go deep on The Town’s unique geology.

The following Thursday, May 16, we will hear from the famed architect and the CEO who restored and are now programming the Henry J. Kaiser Center for the Arts where we now host our weekly meetings.

Then mid-month, Saturday, May 16, we will enjoy a fun day of fellowship at the Oakland Roots game as they take on Nor Cal rival Sacramento Republic.

On Thursday, May 21, there will be a special joint meeting of the Rotary Club of San Francisco and our Rotary Club of Oakland, the 2nd and 3rd Rotary clubs established on earth of over 35,000 around the globe over the past century. Pretty cool, right? And we’ll be learning about a very timely issue - The Iran War: Causes and Consequences.

Finally, on May 28, join us for our offsite meeting - a very special one as we gather with the Center for Independent Living and the East Bay Regional Parks District to celebrate the Oakland Rotary Barrier Free Park at the Roberts Regional Recreation Area.

This Thursday is our offsite meeting - and we’re visiting the brand new downtown campus of Samuel Merritt University, followed by drinks at a local spot.

The new SMU campus is a beautiful state-of-the-art healthcare teaching facility in the heart of downtown Oakland, designed to serve over 2,500 students. RSVP required for the tour (Eventbrite link in comments).

Afterwards, we will stroll a block over to Penelope Oakland, a wonderful local watering hole, for drinks and fellowship.

Happy Spring from Rotary Oakland! No April Fools here. Just dedicated civic folks promoting fun, fellowship, and our future.

Here is our lineup of April events (not including our on-going civic service projects). It’s a very busy month:

This Thursday, April 2, we welcome a violinist to our meeting to talk about the power of music.

Next Thursday, April 9, we welcome the Director of Conservation of the Golden Gate Bird Alliance.

On Thursday, April 16, we will be all over town attending Brown Bag Lunches at various Rotarian places of work.

And on April 23 we have two events: First is our all-remote meeting to discuss online safety for children with an expert in that policy area.

That evening, Thursday, April 23, is our annual gala. Don’t miss this incredible evening of fun and fellowship.

To close out the month, on April 30, we have our offsite at the beautiful new downtown campus of Samuel Merritt University.

Rotary and Children’s Fairyland have a long history of partnership. From Rotary Club of Oakland helping to fund the opening of the park itself in 1950 to Rotary providing funding for TK field trips to Fairyland in the last two years. Both the past and current Executive Directors of Fairyland have been Rotary Oakland club members. (Shout out to and !)

Today, Rotary Oakland is choosing Fairyland for its major district service project, which involves an investment of both time and treasure in sprucing up a specific project within the park…the return of Play Island!

Thanks to Rotary District 5170 for kicking in some funds to match the local Rotary Oakland contribution! Thanks to all who came out to put up the rope fence and got the first piece in the restoration work completed.

More service-driven improvements coming soon!

Yesterday Oakland Rotary welcomed UC Berkeley Chancellor Rich Lyons for a fascinating talk about how our country’s #1 public university is navigating the challenges and opportunities of these times.

We also heard from longtime Rotarian and Cal grad Ahmad Anderson - a 2022 Cal Athletics Hall of Fame Inductee. He led everyone in a rousing Cal Bears chant.

What else? We inducted our newest member Randy Maderios from First Foundation; heard the 3-minute intro from newish member Ann Bricks; provided updates on our tree planting and Fairyland improvement projects; invited folks out to our next feed the hungry volunteer day; and shared news of our upcoming gala, business development mixer, and new Rotary Pathway guide for new members. Phew! That’s a lot for one hour but that’s how Rotary rolls!
