This Thursday at Rotary, Developijg Tteatments for Rare Diseases with Emil Kakkas, MD, PhD.

We all have had experiences with disease in ourselves or our families. While there are so many common diseases like diabetes, infections or cancer, there are nearly 10,000 rare diseases that individually are rare but together affect about 10% of the population.

For 95% of these rare diseases there are no treatment available and yet they are very serious diseases.

In the last few years, so much new science and technology is opening the door to treating the most complex diseases that affect humans.

The question remains if we have the technology, why would we not use it, even if the disease is rare. The problem is not just one of science, but now about how our drug regulation and health system works.

We can all agree, if you get something bad that happens to be rare, should we use our best science to treat you?

Dr. Kakkis is best known for his work developing novel treatments for rare diseases and working on policy issues affecting rare and ultrarare disease treatment. He is Chief Executive Officer, President and Founder of Ultragenyx, a company with four approved therapies for five rare diseases and multiple late-stage clinical programs. Dr. Kakkis has received numerous awards
including the Life Science Leadership Pantheon award from California Life Sciences, a Lifetime Achievement Award from the National MPS Society, the Roscoe O. Brady Award for innovation from the WORLDSymposium and BIO’s Henri Termeer Visionary Leadership award for his transformative work in rare diseases. He was honored with the Lifetime Achievement Award at the Bay Area Biotech Forum, San Francisco Business Times (May 2026) and recognized as one of the Bay Areas Most Admired CEOs by the San Francisco Business Times (May 2024).

Today was Career Development Day for the Lighthouse Interact Club.

Rotarian Daniel Cheng coordinated a visit by Rotarian Isaac Kos-Read, a public affairs professional focused on Results that Matter for clients and community.

The purpose: To share your story with our Interactors (Rotary for high schoolers) and to hopefully inspire them to achieve their American Dream.

After presenting his fascinating background for about 20 minutes, Isaac took questions for another 40 minutes. On the way out, right before the photo was taken, two of the students exclaimed, “Thank you! I felt inspired today listening to you.”

We’re always looking for more volunteers to join us in Oakland’s classrooms and many other spaces.

Dr. Joel Parrott is one of those Rotarians who truly embodies our motto of . Today we honored him with a “re-introduction” and celebration of his life and decades of service to the Oakland Zoo, to Rotary, and to living beings - two-legged, four-legged, and flying - here, in Africa, and around the globe. To celebrate the occasion, we were joined by former Oakland Mayor Elihu Harris. Thank you, Joel.

We also got to know one of our newer members, Erandy Lombera, founder of Lombera Construction, who shared about his journey of service that began with his parents journey from Mexico decades ago.

We also welcomed a new member, Ben Stolurow, the Executive Director of Art for Oakland Kids, and heard from a creative and engaging speaker.

What a day! Thank you all for joining us. And see you next Thursday - same time, same place. That’s Rotary Oakland, the longest standing service club in The Town.

This week’s Oakland Rotary speaker is fascinating. He uncovered a $0.75 discrepancy in the books of a national lab back in the 70s, leading to a multi-year, multi-country spy ring investigation before “hacking” was even a word.

We welcomed a new member from Lincoln University, celebrated a member who just won best sparkling w**e 🥂 in the world 🌎 (!), and, most importantly, listened and learned about Japanese Koto music from local icon Shirley Muramoto, who learned the instrument from her mother, who learned it while in an internment camp during World War II.
