The Garrett County Sheriff’s Office held a memorial ceremony this week to pay tribute to Deputy David Livengood and his K-9 partner, Sarge, who were killed in the line of duty on January 18, 1979.

The tragedy occurred during an armed robbery at the Army Navy Store in Oakland. Forty-seven years later, the Sheriff's Office continues to honor their ultimate sacrifice, ensuring that the bravery displayed by both Deputy Livengood and Sarge is never forgotten by the community they served.

Past and present K-9 handlers, and members of the Livengood family gathered for a commemorative event to mark the anniversary.

Attendees pictured in the memorial tribute (from left to right):

• Front Row (Kneeling): Sgt. Bryan Ridder with K9 Loki, and Senior Deputy Corey Durst with K9 Boa.

• Back Row: Cpl. Dave McLaughlin (Retired), Major Mike Bittinger (Retired), Lt. Dave T***s (Retired), Ed Livengood (Retired Sheriff's Office Correctional Officer and brother of Deputy David Livengood), Jessica Lucas (niece of Deputy David Livengood), Sheriff Bryson Meyers, and Sgt. Shawn Durst.

Several former Sheriff's Office K-9 handlers who wished to be present and were unable to attend, included Captain Chris Helbig, former Deputy Jeff Green, and First Sgt. Brad Palmer (currently with the Morgantown Police Department).

"It is a privilege to stand with the Livengood family and our K9 units, both past and present," said Sheriff Bryson Meyers. "The bond between a handler and their partner is sacred, and the legacy of Deputy Livengood and Sarge remains a vital part of our office's identity. We remain forever grateful for their service."

We will never forget that cold winter day, January 18, 1979.

Deputy Sheriff David G. Livengood and his K-9 partner Sarge responded to a silent alarm at an army/navy discount store in Oakland. Deputy Livengood was shot and killed by two perpetrators who fled and were later apprehended. His K-9 partner Sarge suffered wounds from a sword and died.

Deputy Livengood and his K-9 Sarge both paid the ultimate sacrifice protecting the citizens of Garrett County. We are forever grateful for your service.
