Good evening,

Today we suffered a loss. The unexpected passing of our Union Brother Jermaine Newton comes as a shock to us all. I want to send our love and condolences to his family, friends, as well as our union siblings that knew and worked with Mr. Newton. Please reach out to me directly if you need to talk, I am here for ALL OF YOU.

There are recourses available. The City’s Employee Assistance Program is available for free to all employees and includes grieving and trauma support. Department leadership in OPW is actively working now to bring EAP support to the employee’s workplace.

With empathy,

Antoinette Blue

"The Mayor’s Administrative Instruction is the result of real collaboration between City leadership, Human Resources, and labor. This illustrates that when labor and management come together with shared values and a clear purpose - mountains CAN be moved. City employees are committed to protecting our immigrant communities, and this guidance gives workers clarity, protection, and confidence in how to respond to ICE interactions. Oakland is a Sanctuary City not just in name, but in practice, and this policy defends that commitment by safeguarding public trust, protecting families, and making clear that City resources and employees will not be used to carry out federal immigration enforcement.” - Antoinette Blue 💜

Today, I signed two Executive Orders to protect our immigrant residents and make one thing clear we will not allow our city’s resources to be used against our own people.

These orders establish the Protect the Town Task Force, prohibit federal officials from using Oakland property for immigration enforcement operations, and ensure OPD maintains independence from any federal forces.

This is who we are. Oakland is a city of refuge. A welcoming home. A place where we protect each other.

We will defend our communities. We will uphold our values. And we will always protect the Town.
