Sometimes the best sign that something is clicking is what students choose to do when no one asks them to.

During a recent PE outreach visit at Roosevelt Middle School, a group of returning Goggles and Helmets players spotted Coach Alex and Coach Trent at lunch and asked if they could borrow the sticks and goals.
Within minutes, they had set up their own two-on-two drill, almost exactly like one they’d practiced with OLC.

No coaches directing. No scheduled practice. Just students choosing to spend their free time playing lacrosse and leading their own impromptu Roosevelt practice. 🥍

That’s the kind of mission moment we love to see: young people building confidence, taking ownership and making the game their own.

“Why do you only come on Tuesdays? You should come on Fridays too!”

When students start asking for MORE time with their mentors, you know something special is happening!

At Bret Harte Middle School, our eight-week Girls with Goals program is bringing students together through lacrosse, mentorship, and plenty of fun.

At a recent session, about 10 girls gathered for snacks, music, and a conversation about friendship. When one student requested a line-dancing song, Kennedy, one of our Cal Lacrosse volunteers, jumped in to share her love of line dancing. Before long, several girls were on their feet, dancing together and teaching one another the moves!

One student even appointed herself the official greeter, welcoming everyone through the door with a special password: a hug.

These moments remind us that lacrosse is about so much more than what happens on the field. It's about building confidence, creating a sense of belonging, and connecting young people with role models who show them what's possible.

Through Girls with Goals, we're strengthening relationships with local schools and introducing more girls to a sport they can continue playing through middle school, high school, and beyond.

And if the students have anything to say about it, Tuesdays can't come around soon enough! 🥍

A goal means more when it’s yours.

Through OLC’s T.A.G. program, mentees set goals connected to Wellness, Academics, Lacrosse and Leadership. Or, what we call W.A.L.L.

Our mentors don’t tell students what goal to work toward. They help each mentee identify their own interests, strengths and areas where they want to grow.

For Sadie and Jojo, their 2025 goal was to improve their stick handling.

With support from their T.A.G. mentors, they worked on those skills throughout the year. Then, at their first playdate of 2026, the OLC team got to see the payoff. Sadie and Jojo crushed it.

That’s the heart of T.A.G., helping young people recognize what they’re capable of, set goals that matter to them and build the confidence and skills to reach them.

Way to go, Sadie and Jojo. And good luck to all the 2026 mentees on achieving your goals! 🥍

Meet Coach Jackson. 🥍

For 15 years, Oakland Lacrosse has been shaped by the coaches, players, alumni, and supporters who have shown up for Oakland youth.

And Coach Jackson is an important part of that story.

As we celebrate our 15th program year, we’re looking back at the people and moments that made OLC what it is today.

Meet a few members of the 2026 T.A.G. Team—coaches-turned-mentors to support OLC players more holistically.

T.A.G., which stands for Time‑Management, Advocacy, and Goal‑Setting Program, pairs returning players 1-on-1 with coaches for guidance, encouragement, and accountability. They meet with their mentors 2-3 times a week to set and pursue goals, developing both short-term and long-term plans.

Through mentorship and cross-program connections, participants feel valued, supported, and empowered, strengthening their growth, resilience, and skills to navigate challenges on and off the field.

What a night for Oakland Lacrosse! 🥍🎶

Thank you to everyone who joined us at Diablo Country Diablo Country Club on October 3rd for our 2nd Annual OLC Benefit Concert with Shane Smith & the Saints! Together we raised $260,000 to fuel our mission—supporting Oakland Public School students in becoming healthy, confident, and self-empowered youth who effectively navigate systems, overcome challenges, and achieve their education and life goals.

We’re grateful to Shane Smith & The Saints for returning to support OLC, to Diablo Country Club for hosting, and to everyone who helped make the evening possible.

This concert brought our community together around a shared purpose: empowering Oakland youth. Your support helps OLC create opportunities for young people to build skills, confidence, and connections on and off the field.

Thank you for showing up for Oakland youth and for being part of the OLC community!

For Coach Denzel Tongue, OLC’s recent Career Day was more than a chance to talk about careers. It was a chance to give back.

A former OUSD student at Oakland Tech himself, Denzel joined OLC alumni, players, Summer Ambassadors, and community partners to talk candidly about career pivots, burnout, opportunities in health careers, and his own path into health policy.

That full-circle journey—from student to Oakland Tech Helmet Coach and mentor—is exactly what makes the OLC so special.

Our work has always been about more than what happens on the lacrosse field. It’s about helping young people build confidence, explore what’s possible, make meaningful connections, and see people in their community showing them what the next step can look like.

Thank you, Coach Denzel, for coming back and helping the next generation of Oakland scholar-athletes imagine where their own paths might lead.

Pick up a stick. Try something new. Find a sport you love. 💜🥍

We had an incredible time joining the Golden State Valkyries and Kaiser Permanente for She Plays On Field Day, where OUSD girls in grades 3–8 got to explore lacrosse alongside basketball, soccer, volleyball, golf, rowing, pickleball and more.

The energy was HIGH and one of our favorite parts was watching so many girls try lacrosse for the first time. 🙌

The learning continued off the field, too. OLC staff and coaches joined the She Plays On Coaches Summit to dig into why girls leave sports and what coaches and organizations can do to help more young athletes feel supported, confident, and excited to keep playing.

Huge thanks to the Golden State Valkyries for creating space for girls to play, grow, connect, and discover what they’re capable of.

We’d happily do this one again.
