One of our instructors, G**o Jay Jasper Pugao Jay Jasper will be teaching and sharing at the LIFE IS LIVING festival at Defremery Park celebrating the Legacy of the Black Panther party for Self Defence and ancestor, Master Bruce Lee’s Legacy here in Oakland.

From Dr. Hodari Davis: The full name ,“The Black Panther Party for Self Defense” is a reminder, an affirmation of the mission. This party had a purpose, to defend self, community
and each other, defend the people, from the forces aiming to diminish our lives, and our power.

These elders and ancestors were building machines to defend us, they believed
that “pending revolution” we needed to emphasize our survival. This included food programs, health clinics, mutual aide, a newspaper, a school, intergenerational activities and more.

At Life is Living, this year we are going to
highlight traditional self defense to bring awareness of the legacy of martial arts in Oakland, the incredible schools and teachers who offer classes around the Town.

We will feature Martial Arts exhibitions and workshops for attendees, especially young people, to gain some hands-on experience in various combat arts.

We were grateful to have Diego from Oakland Freedom Project join us during our food distribution to share information about the upcoming P.O.W.E.R. community series and the importance of civic participation.

Too often, our communities don’t have access to opportunities to learn about elections, ballots, and how decisions made at the local and state level impact our everyday lives. Diego took the time to break this information down in English and Spanish, making it easier to understand and giving community members space to ask questions, learn, and feel more informed.

Access to information matters, and making that information clear, welcoming, and accessible is an important part of making sure our communities can participate and have their voices heard.

A reflection from leader Selena Gonzalez Selena Gonzalez as she represents Homies at the Big Picture Learning Ashé Fellowship. “My time in Montgomery, Alabama, was more than a visit, it was a chance to see Alabama itself as a classroom.

Walking through The Legacy Museum The Legacy Museum and Legacy Sites invited me to confront the history of this country in a way books alone cannot teach.
We moved through slavery, racial terror and lynching, Jim Crow, segregation, and mass incarceration, while learning from the resistance, courage, and humanity of the people who lived through these systems.

There was something powerful about standing on the land where so much of this history took place.

I found myself thinking about the pain and violence that surrounded the building of this country.
About the generations who endured slavery and racial hierarchy.
About the ways those systems did not disappear, but evolved and continue to shape our institutions today.

And yet, Montgomery reminded me that history is not only a story of suffering.

It is a story of resistance.

Of people who organized, fought, loved, dreamed, and demanded something different for the generations to come.
You can feel their spirit throughout Montgomery.
Their courage lives in the places they stood, the movements they built, and the possibilities they imagined.

This experience reminded me that this nation still has work to do.
Creating a more just future requires the courage to learn the truth.
Truth can be painful, but without it there can be no real healing, transformation, or liberation.

I left Montgomery carrying both the weight of what I learned and the responsibility of what comes next.

For me, this experience has become fuel.

Fuel to return home to Oakland and continue advancing justice in my own community.
Fuel to keep creating spaces where young people can reclaim dignity, safety, hope, and possibility.
Fuel to question the systems we have inherited while helping build something different.

Montgomery reminded me that we inherit history, but we also help shape what comes next.”

May it feed your soul and strengthen your resolve! We thank Janet Stickmon as she has grown with us. From visiting us at our Homies Dinners 15+ years ago, to featuring her book at our old community center on MacArthur, to now her books have traveled with us to our newest location. Wisdom travels and we salute her for her life’s work(s).

Homies Empowerment and The FREEdom School EDP Headquarters along with the Dr. Kirin Rajagopalan People’s Library is making progress! We are located at the City of Refuge UCC City of Refuge Center in East Oakland! We gave away over 1000 of our books, but Dr. Lisa Asedillo is helping us house a part of our collection at Pacific School of Religion We are excited to bring the books home and to launch our HQ!
