Women's Foundation California

Women's Foundation California We invest in, train, and connect community leaders to advance racial, economic, and gender justice.

We invest in, train, and connect community leaders to advance gender, racial, and economic justice. We do this by providing grants to community-led organizations, training community leaders through the Women’s Policy Institute, and fostering a community of advocates, donors, policymakers, grantmakers, academics and many others through convenings to share knowledge and strengthen the social justice

movement in California. Unlike private foundations, which are endowed with funds from a family’s wealth or corporate earnings, community foundations gather their financial contributions from the public — from individuals, families, and businesses who want to support social change. Learn more about our work by browsing through our website, sign up for our email alerts, follow us on Facebook, or Twitter, and if possible, make a donation. By making a tax-deductible charitable donation to The Women’s Foundation of California, you join many others who are dedicated to our mission of shaping a just and equitable California.

General mood for this moment – and a reminder to never go silent.
A beautiful message and powerful performance by our very own Elizabeth, Senior Program Manager of our Solís Policy Institute which guides our fellows to use their own voices to uplift themselves, our communities, and our collective movements.

Pride was Black. Pride was trans. Pride was a riot.
This country loves a movement once it’s been defanged. Once the anger has been ironed out and the history has been sanitized.
We don’t do safe.
Q***r liberation is feminist liberation. Trans rights are women’s rights. None of us are free until all of us are free. The fight is one.
Happy Pride, this month and every month to follow, until liberation.

Last week, at the California Museum, the feminist agenda was in the room. Not as a slogan. As a feeling — part possibility, part gratitude, part rage — that’s been sharpening itself for a long time.

Our SPI State fellows took the stage with four bills — AB 2318, AB 2624, SB 1271, and AB 1201 — each one carried into the legislature by our fellows who know exactly what’s at stake because they’ve lived it in their own communities.

Board member Aldita Amaru Gallardo closed the evening by naming what so many in the room already know: “When the institution and the foundation supports you, you feel the power that feminist movements have been building here, locally, regionally, and statewide.”

That power doesn’t appear from nowhere. It is built collectively, sustained intentionally, and resourced by people who understand that redistribution is a feminist act.

We are so grateful to be in this work with you. ✊

Mothers are the original makers: of life, of language, of culture, of resistance. They sing us into being. They name us. They pass down recipes and remedies and revolutions. We are matrilineal. We come from women who built whole worlds with their hands and their hearts.

And today, we hold ALL of them.

The ones laughing with their children right now. The ones in ICE detention who cannot. The mothers who are grieving. The foremothers whose names history forgot but whose love we still carry in our bones.

Motherhood is not one story — it is every story. The joy AND the grief. The creation AND the fight.

Today we honor all of it. All of them.

Last week over 6000 delegates from 189 countries came together as to advance a shared vision for gender equality and social justice.

It was an incredible gathering, and we’re especially proud that our very own CEO, , moderated a powerful conversation on “Sexual Violence is a Public Health Crisis” and what it takes to move from awareness to real, actionable solutions.

We leave spaces like these energized, and committed to carrying this work forward together.

Housing Insecurity in Los Angeles County has officially declared a Public Health Crisis.

On April 14th, the motion our 2025 SPI Local Housing Security team helped champion, co-authored by Supervisor and Supervisor , came before the LA Board of Supervisors – and it passed!

We are endlessly proud of the SPI fellows and alums who continue to show up. Not just for the final policy win, but for every step, every meeting, every call it takes to get there. This is what building a future rooted in dignity looks like.

We see the pattern.

Just yesterday, the Supreme Court delivered a verdict undermining decades of hard fought activism, striking at what is widely hailed as a cornerstone of the Civil Rights Movement. And this week ICE quietly opened another detention center in a former California prison.

Gutting the Voting Rights Act, spending trillions on war in Iran, and billions on weapons to fuel genocide in Palestine.

This is not an accident, this is an extraordinary political will to attack, disenfranchise, and defund our communities.

But we have power too. And only the people united, el pueblo unido, can take the bold action needed to demand a future rooted in freedom and solidarity.

Join us tomorrow, on May 1, 2026, we flex our economic and political power.
Tomorrow, we will show up for each other because we care.
