VISIT AFRICAN AMERICAN MUSEUM AND LIBRARY AT OAKLAND
Did you know the African American Museum and Library at Oakland (AAMLO) has roots going back to 1946? That’s right. What began with community members collecting stories and artifacts grew into the East Bay Negro Historical Society, then the Northern California Center for Afro-American History and Life.
In 1994, it officially became AAMLO, and since 2002 has been located at the beautifully restored historic Charles S. Greene Library at 659 14th Street, Oakland. The museum is open Monday through Thursday from 10:00 am – 5:30 pm, Friday 12:00 pm – 5:30 pm and Saturday, 10:00 om – 5:30 pm. The AAMLO is open to the public.
AAMLO is dedicated to the discovery, preservation, interpretation and sharing of historical and cultural experiences of African Americans in California and the West for present and future generations.
