We were just at the 25th Annual California Green Building Conference at UC Berkeley!

Our CEO, Julia, was one of the keynote speakers and opened with one question: “What if the most important question in green building right now isn’t what we build, but who builds it?”

Julia made the case that good, accessible green jobs are one of the best tools we have to take on the two biggest challenges of our time: climate and poverty. People building our green future deserve jobs they can actually build a life on.

“I believe that the success of the next 25 years depends on whether we can hold multiple things at once. Buildings and workers. Speed and justice. Scale and equity. Climate and community. They are not trade-offs. They are the same work.”

Abbie repped our Policy team, leading a table talk on how to make good, accessible jobs more available in the decarbonization field. She walked building professionals through the organizations already helping contractors do this work, and the gaps that still need filling.

Rising Sun Center for Opportunity is seeking a compassionate and experienced Substance Abuse Counselor to support participants in our Opportunity Build program.

This is a part-time independent contractor working 1 day per week (Monday or Wednesday), with hours ranging from approximately 2–8 hours, depending on participant need. Pay is $60/hour.

The counselor will provide:
• One-on-one, 30-minute counseling sessions with participants who do not pass required drug screenings
• Supportive, trauma-informed guidance focused on accountability, wellness, and goal achievement
• Referrals to additional treatment or recovery resources as needed
• Documentation of participant engagement and recommendations

Ideal candidates will have:
• Experience working with justice-impacted individuals
• Strong understanding of substance use, recovery, and motivational interviewing
• Ability to build rapport with participants while maintaining professional boundaries
• Appropriate certification, registration, or licensure in California

Opportunity Build is a construction pre-apprenticeship and workforce development program serving underrepresented young adults in the Bay Area. We are looking for someone who believes in second chances, workforce equity, and meeting participants where they are.

Lasagna and peanut butter were not on the curriculum… until it was 🏗️🥜🍝

To kick off the High School Cohort’s 10-week Opportunity Build program, we got the cohort members and Rising Sun staff together to build towers with various crackers, pretzels, uncooked lasagna, and peanut butter. Jenn (Lead Case Manager) and John (Welding Instructor) then judged the towers on structural integrity, beauty, and feasibility. 🛠️🤪

This is our second year welcoming high school students to the Opportunity Build program, and we couldn’t be more excited!! ☀️ Please help us give them a warm, Rising Sun welcome in the comments!
