Rising Sun is a premier nonprofit organization working at the intersection of economic equity and climate resilience in the California Bay Area and San Joaquin County. With offices in Oakland and Stockton, our workforce development programs specialize in preparing youth, women, and individuals in reentry for high-road careers and green pathways that offer family-sustaining wages. g in 1994, Rising Sun has served more than 3,000 youth and adults while helping over 52,700 households reduce their carbon footprint. We run two impactful programs:
Since 2000, **Climate Careers** has trained and employed local youth to provide no-cost energy and water efficiency services and education to Bay Area and San Joaquin County residents. Through this social enterprise model, young leaders gain hands-on work experience, fight climate change, and help community members save resources and money.

**Opportunity Build** is an industry-certified construction training program, providing a path to union apprenticeship in the skilled trades. Through job training, case management, and job placement support, adults who enter the program with barriers to successful employment gain the skills they need to begin high-road careers in the construction industry.

Take 5 minutes TODAY to call Assembly Budget Chair Jesse Gabriel, telling him to protect climate and affordability funding before August 31st. Script in graphic ^

$2 billion is currently set to be cut from California’s climate and affordability programs, defunding affordable housing programs, transit and bus service programs, rail expansion to underserved areas, zero-emission bus transitions, clean drinking water access, and CA’s only clean air program. The State Legislature has the power to undo these cuts and put these programs first in line for funding, as previous legislation intended. Chair Gabriel is a key decision maker in what will be included in the final California budget deal.

This summer, we had the pleasure of hosting Ashton, a rising sophomore at Lick-Wilmerding High School, through our partnership with Coro California’s Exploring Leadership program!

Ashton jumped into recruitment, operations, and cohort support alongside our Opportunity Build team. He requested informational interviews across our org to understand how a nonprofit like ours operates. He even sat down with 3 of our OB students to hear firsthand how our programs changed their paths.

“I initially assumed all the departments worked independently, but after having conversations with staff from different teams, I realized departments are actually highly interconnected… Through this internship, I gained a much deeper appreciation for the people, planning, and collaboration that make a nonprofit’s mission become real impact.”

Time to highlight the Bay Area!!☀️

Another 1,200 households—this time in the Bay—are saving more water, energy, and money on their utility bills, at no cost to residents. And it’s all thanks to this group’s work over just 5 weeks and across 6 counties!!

We spent yesterday celebrating, reflecting on how participants have grown, and sharing food and laughs together.

We even saw a live performance of a Rising Sun rap song by youth participants (and we’re very proud to say this isn’t our first time having a rap song made about us 😄😌)!!

Please help us congratulate them! So proud of the entire Climate Careers program this summer.

👂⏭️ And stay tuned to hear about all the externships happening across California this fall! 🍁🍂
