Happening in Naples…

“Taboo, Transgression, and Humour: Negotiating Social Boundaries in East and Southeast Asian Contexts”

University of Naples L’Orientale, Italy, October 21-22, 2026, coordinated by Thuy Hien Le and Wiseon Kim.

This two-day conference will explore how principles of hierarchical respect, social ritual, and cultural norms, as well as their deliberate transgressions, reinterpretations, and challenges, are reflected in literary, linguistic, artistic, and intercultural practices across East and Southeast Asia.

It aims to foster interdisciplinary dialogue among scholars of literature, linguistics, cultural studies, translation, and the arts, with particular attention to how humour, irony, and taboo operate as tools for negotiating social boundaries.

As anyone who has ever tried standup comedy will tell you, being funny in conversation and being funny when you are the only person talking are two different skills. The qualities that make someone fun at dinner do not qualify them to write a sitcom, and vice versa. In recent years, being good at talking has become increasingly lucrative as podcasts have become wildly popular. This has created a new comedy ecosystem, where comedians now routinely give their audiences hours of new material every week, in exchange for subscription and advertising revenue that also goes more substantially and directly to the artists. Peru has elected a mayor named Hi**er Mussolini. Hi**er Mussolini Simeón Flores won the mayoral election in Queropalca, a small district in the Huánuco region, with 34.5% of the vote.

His unusual name combines those of two historical dictators, Adolf Hi**er and Benito Mussolini.
