About Factory Farming Awareness Coalition (FFAC)

FFAC has grown from one paid employee to fourteen, our reach has grown from 3,000 people per year to around 57,000 people per year, and our scope of programmatic activity has expanded from the first phase of humane education to mentoring activists and leading institutions towards meaningful change.

The Factory Farming Awareness Coalition was founded by Katie Cantrell in 2010 to educate people about the ecological and social justice hazards of factory farming. As a student at UC Berkeley and a longtime vegan, she found that while there were courses focused on public health, social justice, and sustainability, none were addressing the critical issue of factory farming and its devastating impacts on multiple fronts. Similarly troubling was a dearth of organizations specifically focused on the issue of factory farming from an intersectional perspective.

At first, Katie offered to give free presentations to classes. Demand quickly expanded, and with it FFAC’s staff. She found passionate advocates first in Denver, then in other regions around the country. In 2014, FFAC became a fiscal sponsor of Vegan Outreach and took form as a full-time project. To complement the presentations, FFAC began community outreach, organizing events and collaborating in particular with environmental groups, deepening our commitment and spreading our message by becoming part of the Food and Climate Alliance.

FFAC has grown to thirteen paid employees, and our programmatic activity has expanded from the first phase of humane education to mentoring activists and leading institutions towards meaningful change. In 2018, FFAC became it’s own 501(c)(3) nonprofit.
