On September 10th, FVAP hosted a virtual town hall with stakeholders from across California to talk through what our CA Supreme Court win means in practice.

What stood out:
🔹 The ruling was unambiguous: courts must create a record of what happens. If they cannot provide a court reporter, and a litigant cannot afford one, courts must use electronic recording without burdensome procedural hurdles, in all civil cases.

🔹 Changes are already happening. One town hall participant shared that her court initially tried to require a fee waiver before granting her recording request. Citing the new mandate directly was enough to change that on the spot.

🔹 FVAP and our partners are working with our community to ensure implementation is happening, consistently and meaningfully, in all 58 courts across the state.

The ruling protects the right to a record — but making that right real, court by court, is still ahead of us.

On August 10, the California Supreme Court ruled in FVAP's favor, establishing the right to a free verbatim record of civil proceedings for those who cannot afford a private court reporter — a critical step toward real access to appeal for survivors and their families.

This ruling, however, is only the beginning. On Thursday, September 10th at 12:00pm PST, FVAP, Covington & Burling, Legal Aid SoCal, and Bay Area Legal Aid are convening a virtual town hall with stakeholders across California to discuss what comes next: ensuring every survivor who needs a free recording receives one, in every California court.
