Sustainable Economies Law Center

We provide education, research, and advocacy for just and resilient local economies

Sustainable Economies Law Center exists to bridge the gap in legal expertise needed to transition from destructive economic systems to innovative and cooperative alternatives. Our 10 programs work together in identifying key leverage points in our existing economic and legal systems, removing strategic legal barriers, and creating replicable models for community resilience. We work to:
- Envision

more just and resilient economic and legal systems;
Identify and advocate for public policies that remove legal barriers to resilient communities while maintaining and strengthening worker, consumer and environmental protections;
- Empower community-based entrepreneurs and innovators to create replicable legal structures that will form the blueprints of the new economy;
- Educate communities and law-makers about the potential of new economic strategies; and
- Train the next generation of community-based lawyers to meet the burgeoning legal needs of resilient communities everywhere.

Meet , a Bay Area worker-owned operation turning waste into wonder. They cultivate Shiitakes, Lion’s Mane, Oysters, and more. Alongside the mushroom cultivation, they’re building soil rich compost for sale to the wider public. Urban land stewardship, food sovereignty, and worker ownership are a powerful combination that deserves far more recognition. This nano-training will cover practical strategies for identifying, approaching, and cultivating individual donors in ways that feel authentic, relational, and aligned with your artistic practice.
Presented Nicole Lugtu (she/her). Nicole is a Bay Area-bred immigrant and arts fundraising professional who is proud to support and amplify local creatives and artists through her work and advocacy. She is an artist as a hobby and an art historian by education, thanks to the vibrant cultural institutions and vast opportunities to engage with art in the Bay. Nicole worked in development at San Francisco Ballet, San Francisco-Marin Food Bank, and SFMOMA and currently uplifts the work of Asian and Asian diaspora artists by working in philanthropy at the Asian Art Museum. Her personal art practice includes darkroom photography, watercolor, and acrylics with room to learn much more. She is a passionate advocate for our local and regional arts and hopes to give back to the communities that positively impact her own work and values.

Resilient Movements Legal Café is a legal advice clinic for grassroots groups, nonprofits, and community organizations seeking to strengthen infrastructure resilience, operational continuity and preparedness, and legal compliance. These sessions offer a supportive container to work through practical questions related to governance, entity structures, and internal policies, and to demystify how to navigate periods of heightened scrutiny, helping groups move from uncertainty to grounded strategy and planning in support of their missions and day-to-day operations.
