Radio B'alam - Mayan Voices is an internet-based radio station, outreach, and organizing program founded by members of the Indigenous Mam community in Oakland. With the support of CCHD, our platform and work has grown and now has 41k followers. We produce weekly radio programs to help Mam people learn about their rights, public policies, community services, and Mam cultural celebrations. We connect with the Mam community most Saturdays at the Oakland Flea Market, offering information and support around legal and social services, what to do if they are victims of a crime, and current policy change campaigns. We also mobilize Mam community members, especially youth and women, for policy advocacy and narrative change in the broader society, while helping people understand that we all have the right to use our voices for positive social change.

We are excited to share that Senator Caballero and Assembly member Haney are championing SB 225: Community Anti-Displacement and Preservation Program (CAPP) and a $500 million budget request to support the acquisition and preservation of unsubsidized affordable homes across California.🥳

We’re looking forward to the support of the committee to move this bill forward.📣

Dear Friends and Colleagues:

The Catholic Campaign for Human Development (CCHD) joins with thousands of people who now must grieve the tragic loss of Bishop David G. O’Connell, auxiliary bishop of Los Angeles, who was found shot dead in his home on Saturday, February 18, 2023.

Bishop O’Connell served as a member of the CCHD Subcommittee for the last six years including the last three years as its chair. We mourn alongside many who walked with him to confront violence, deprivation, poverty, and polarization. His dedication and faith-filled service to the integral development of all God’s creation was extraordinary and exemplary. His love of God and neighbor was apparent in all he encountered. The sad irony remains that a person so dedicated to peace and non-violence died in such a violent and senseless act. This is yet one more reminder of how pervasive the horror of gun violence has become in our society.

From the beginning of his time as a priest in Los Angeles, Bishop Dave accompanied a community afflicted by gang violence, poverty, broken families, and tensions between community members and local authorities. He was the chairman of the inter-diocesan Southern California Immigration Task Force and was a long-time leader with local Industrial Areas Foundation (IAF) organizations working to address gun violence, poverty, and the needs of immigrants.

Resources For Racial Justice and How to Get Involved:

Recently, the US has seen nationwide protests as a result of the killing of George Floyd by Minneapolis Police. It is sadly not the first time such a disturbing event has occurred in recent memory. It is, however, a grim result of racial tensions between police and citizens, particularly those in the communities of color.

In many ways, George Floyd's death is a catalyst for change. The haunting video of his killing has circulated endlessly, sparking national and international peaceful protests and mass cries for racial justice and police reform. These tensions have inspired a larger conversation about racial and socioeconomic inequality that is both necessary and a long-time coming. It is a conversation that the Catholic Campaign For Human Development (CCHD) has long participated in. CCHD was originally founded in the aftermath of the late 1960s race riots as a way to address systems and structures that perpetuate the evil of racism. Today, our funded organizations are continuing to live out that mission by amplifying their efforts to address the disparities that contribute to the disproportionate impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on communities of color. By addressing the root causes of poverty and providing education on how to fight systemic racism, as well as locally enacting positive change to enable a bright future for those most vulnerable, CCHD emphasizes empowerment and participation.

Through initiatives like PovertyUSA, CCHD supports and works closely with local organizations that enact change through legislation, labor organization, community organizing, environmental protection, and more.

For 50 years now we've worked for racial justice in all aspects of society -- criminal justice reform, affordable housing, environmental justice, and more -- and will continue to do so. As many communities of color continue to experience the impact of decades of systemic racism, which have led to disparities that prevent families from thriving, the groups CCHD supports seek to address these disparities. “Blessed are the Peacemakers” (Mt 5:9)
January 28 – 31, 2023, Washington, D.C.

Join us at CSMG 2023 as we discuss how each one of us can be peacemakers in our own communities with the Domestic and International Policy Plenary, The Art and Architecture of Peace in A Time of Conflict.

As Pope Francis tells us in Fratelli Tutti, “War is a failure of politics and of humanity, a shameful capitulation, a stinging defeat before the forces of evil. Let us not remain mired in theoretical discussions but touch the wounded flesh of the victims” (no. 261).

Join panelists as they discuss how we are called to be on guard against violent conflict, live as active peacemakers in our own communities, and how we can build bridges when there is so much unjust conflict in our world. The work of Catholic Charities USA and Catholic Relief Services to help articulate the Church’s voice in building peace and responding with love to sisters and brothers who are displaced, migrating, and in need of welcome in a new home will also be discussed.

Online Registration is now Closed. Onsite registration will be available at the hotel. For assistance please contact us at [email protected].

The Issue: Childcare is unaffordable for many working parents.

Affordable quality childcare is something all parents hope for, but for thousands of parents in Oakland it isn’t always an option. That’s why mothers of low-income families across northern California banned together in 1996 to form Parent Voices Oakland. These mothers and families advocated at the local, state, and federal levels for family-friendly policies and to have their voices heard.

Their Impact: Empowering low-income parents to be community leaders who advocate for their own needs.

The grassroots organization continues to fight for affordable quality childcare and offer training, mentorship, and other opportunities so parents can work to improve their financial standings while their children receive the care they need.

Catholic Campaign for Human Development has supported Parent Voices Oakland to engage in parent-led, parent-run community organizing and policy advocacy to expand affordable childcare for low to severely low-income families.

This past Sunday, the 13th of November, was the Sixth World Day of the Poor. In his address, Pope Francis urges Christians to bear witness to the Gospel of joy and to build a more fraternal world:

“Jesus Christ… for your sakes became poor” (cf. 2 Cor 8:9). With these words, the Apostle Paul addresses the first Christians of Corinth in order to encourage their efforts to show solidarity with their brothers and sisters in need. The World Day of the Poor comes this year as a healthy challenge, helping us to reflect on our style of life and on the many forms of poverty all around us.

With support from CCHD, Monument Impact has been able to fund the Day Labor Program!

Take a look at some Day Labor Program Highlights:

• Day Labor Program members have been taking the lead on training other members in key skills that they identify as being needed to improve their employability.

• Members recently completed a carpentry training led by Jose Renderos, where they produced a beautiful cabinet (see pictures) that will be raffled off to raise funds for additional trainings to cover materials, tools and the like.

• The next training started September 19 and is being led by long-term member German Quishpe. Having recently completed certification in Diablo Valley College’s Electrical and Electronics Technology program, German has created a 6-class training to introduce members to electrical systems (See attached pic).
