Located in Oakland, California, Mills College at Northeastern University educates leaders who build a socially, economically and environmentally sustainable future for all. Mills joined Boston-based Northeastern University in 2022 to create something unique in higher education: a bicoastal university for undergraduate and graduate learning that leverages Mills’ strengths in equity, social justice, and women’s leadership and Northeastern’s mission in diverse and inclusive global experiential learning and research. In addition to a full range of undergraduate and graduate degrees that will be offered by Mills College at Northeastern, we have created the Mills Institute to support curricular innovation, create a foundation for student success, and facilitate transformative learning, advocacy, and research. Mills College at Northeastern and the Mills Institute are located in Oakland, California, in the heart of the San Francisco Bay Area, one of the most ethnically diverse areas in the U.S.

How can we translate raw data from war into meaningful, sensitive art? The answer lies in the work professors Yulia Pinkusevich and Mark Henderson do to translate these cold facts into paintings and collages that illustrate the destructive power of war. Their collaboration is discussed at length in a recent Northeastern Global News article.

If you're in New York City before November 7, stop by the Kutlesa Gallery to appreciate the pieces in person.

Professors Stephanie Young and Juliana Spahr recently published Crowd Control: The Racial Ordering of Literary Reward with Mills Poetry MFA alum, Claire Grossman. The book, which is now available to purchase through Columbia University Press, tells the story of how efforts to contain Black resistance led to the invention of American literary excellence. It brings together archival research and comprehensive data on literary prize demographics with readings of works by Claude McKay, Langston Hughes, William Styron, Claudia Rankine, and others to offer a material account of how US literature has imagined—and managed—protest.
