🌱 Today we honor Elaine Smith, Executive Director of Farms to Grow, Inc., for a career defined by courageous leadership and deep, practical care for Black and underserved producers in California and across the United States. Elaine has moved beyond advocacy into systems change, building pathways that connect small‑scale growers to institutional markets, strengthen land stewardship, and protect generational access to farmland.

She spearheaded the Equitable Harvest collaboration with Stanford University, a strategic effort that opens a bridge to procurement channels and expands market access for small scale farmers. Elaine takes a hand-on approach working directly with new and experienced farmers, ranchers, and veterans to deliver training, technical assistance, and market opportunities that help producers survive and thrive.

As producer of the acclaimed documentary Rhythms of the Land, Elaine preserves and amplifies the lived knowledge of Black farmers, centering stories that teach resilience, stewardship, and cultural continuity. A compelling speaker and relentless advocate, she advances food sovereignty, fights to reduce land loss, and inspires young people to see farming as a path to justice and community power.

Today we honor Elaine Smith, a visionary organizer whose work cultivates equity, sustains heritage, and grows the next generation of leaders in our food system. 💞

Today we honor Yolanda Burrell, farmer, educator, beekeeper, and founder of Pollinate Farm situated on the ancestral land of the Ohlone people. Her leadership has shaped a generation of growers, homesteaders, and land stewards across the Bay Area.

Yolanda cultivates seasonal fruits, vegetables, cut flowers, and plants for natural dyes on her urban farm. But her vision of agriculture doesn't stop at the farm gate. Burrell is deeply committed to growing sustainable, ecologically rooted food and teaching communities how to cultivate abundance in ways that honor the land. Her work champions soil health, pollinator protection, and regenerative practices that strengthen local food systems from the ground up. She has also plays a vital role in connecting local chefs and restaurants with high‑quality, locally grown produce, ensuring that fresh, culturally relevant ingredients reach community tables.

Her community roots run just as deep:
🌱 Graduate of the UC Cooperative Extension Master Gardener program
🐝 Member of the Alameda County Beekeepers Association
👩‍🌾 Member, Women of Food and Agriculture
📚 Past project leader, Montclair/OakTown 4H Club
🏛️ Advisory Council, Berkeley Food Institute
🧵 Board member, Black Fiber & Textile Network

This Women’s History Month, we celebrate Yolanda Burrell for her vision, her stewardship, and her unwavering dedication to building a food system where sustainability, quality, and community thrive.
