✨ Wrapping up our Women Supporting Women in KONO series this month ✨
This week, we’re shining a spotlight on The Combine ( ), a women-owned gym founded by Oakland native Alex Hooper. After years of managing flagship fitness studios and building expertise in performance-driven training, Alex returned home to plant her own roots and create a space that elevates both fitness and community.

At The Combine, every workout goes beyond exercise, it’s about connection, energy, and support. The gym is designed to help members move, train, and feel their best, whether you’re just starting out or pushing toward your next goal. Each class feels like a team, where accountability and encouragement drive real growth, inside and out.

More than a gym, The Combine is a space where community and strength come together. Stop by, join a class, and support women-led businesses right here in KONO 💛

Big love to Black Forest Kitchen on celebrating their 1-year anniversary! 🎉

What makes this moment even more special is their journey , starting out as a pop-up vendor across various locations, including our very own Oakland First Fridays, and growing into a full brick-and-mortar right here in The KONO District. This is exactly what it looks like when community, consistency, and opportunity align. 🙌🏾

We’re proud to have been a part of that story and even prouder to see them thriving and pouring back into the culture.

Huge thank you to Yelp Easy Bay for partnering with us to uplift and support our local businesses, this is how we keep Oakland vibrant and growing.

Go pull up, show love, and celebrate a real success story! 🖤✨

✨ Next in our Women Supporting Women in KONO series ✨

This week, we’re spotlighting All Out Comedy Theater (), an Asian woman-run nonprofit creating space for joy, creativity, and connection through comedy.

Founded by Colleen Breen in 2017, All Out Comedy Theater is rooted in resilience and community. After losing their original space during the pandemic, Colleen made the decision to rebuild right here in KONO drawn by the strength and support of the neighborhood.

At its core, the theater is all about lifting each other up. Through improv classes designed for all experience levels, students are encouraged to support one another without judgment. With unlimited scholarships and a commitment to accessibility, no one is ever turned away due to finances. Because here, improv isn’t just performance, it’s a life skill that builds confidence, communication, and connection.

On weekends, the space comes alive with comedy shows ranging from improv and stand-up to musicals and even magic, offering something for everyone to enjoy.

The heart of All Out Comedy Theater is deeply rooted in strong women. From classrooms named after Colleen’s grandmothers to a theater named in honor of her mother, their legacy of perseverance and curiosity lives on in every performance and class.

More than a theater, it’s a community. Come through, catch a show, take a class, and support women-owned spaces right here in KONO 💛

✨ Women Supporting Women in KONO ✨

This month, we’re proud to spotlight the incredible women owned businesses that make the KONO district so special. First up is Cord & Company (@), a beautifully curated vintage shop rooted in Oakland history.

Located in a historic Oakland building, Cord & Company was founded during the pandemic by Cinzia and Cindy of Verunica Vintage. What began as a bold leap during uncertain times has grown into a vibrant space celebrating creativity, sustainability, and community.

Today, the shop is home to an inspiring collective of women vendors, including Lili of Fig and Owl, Calder of Possessed Vintage, and Julene of Sage and Willow. Across two thoughtfully curated floors, you will find antique and vintage furniture, art, housewares, and vintage clothing, along with beautiful kokedama plants from neighbors Soil and Moss and Summer Solace.

Cord & Company is more than a shop. It is a space where community, sustainability, and great design come together. Stop by, explore, and support women owned businesses right here in KONO. 💛
