Just released by Oakland Heritage Alliance!
We did it!
Oakland,The Story of a City, Beth Bagwell’s readable and reliable book, originally appeared in 1982 and has long been the standard local history. Out of print for several years, Oakland Heritage Alliance has now released a second edition.
It faithfully replicates the entire original text and index, using new scans for most of the images. We are proud to bring this key volume back into print, and grateful to its many funders and supporters for making it possible.
Included in this new addition is a 32-page Afterword, “The City in a New Century,” Erika Mailman, historical novelist and 12-year history columnist for The Montclarion newspaper, covers some of the major events of the decades since the first edition appeared. She includes accounts of the cataclysmic 1989 earthquake and 1991 fire, summaries of some major demographic and development trends as the city moved into the twenty-first century, and 17 new images.
