Intertribal Friendship House (IFH) located in Oakland, CA was established in 1955 as one of the first urban American Indian community centers in the nation. It was founded by the American Friends Service Committee to serve the needs of American Indian people relocated from reservations to the San Francisco Bay Area. Originally created as a community center, IFH expanded into social services when s

taff became concerned about the lack of resources for American Indian people as they faced the challenges of relocation from reservations to urban communities such as Oakland due to the displacement from their native lands. The Bay Area American Indian community is multi-tribal, made of Native people and their descendants—those who originate here and those who have come to the Bay region from all over the United States and from other parts of this hemisphere. We are honored that IFH will be celebrating its 70th Anniversary in 2025. This is a testament to the resiliency and commitment of our community.

The month of June Drum & Dance Practice is here!

The dinner line-up is looking good this month, and we already know Wednesday nights at IFH are some of the best times to come together. There’s just something about sharing dinner, slowing down for a bit, and being in good company that brings us closer in this crazy urban rez life we all live. IFH is our home away from home, and as always, we look forward to seeing everyone there. We've got a good month ahead of us!

Stop by, bring your family, maybe a side if you’re able, and spend your Wednesday night with the native community.

It's Flashback Friday!

Today we're turning back the clock to 1966! A time of big dreams, new beginnings, and exciting changes for IFH. That's right, 1966! 🤗We were just settling into our new home at 523 East 14th Street (known today as International Boulevard), planting roots in community that would shape our story for generations to come.

Looking at this newsletter reminds us of where we started, the people who helped build our foundation, and the journey that brought us to where we are today! Should we bring back some of these events and activities of 1966?

Have any favorite memories of IFH? We'd love to hear them. ❤️

Thank you to a community member for sending us this! We love happy mail! Enjoy our American Indian Bulletin October 1966!

Intertribal Friendship House and Indian Health Center of Santa Clara Valley invite community members who participated in the MMIP surveys back in March 2025 to join us for a community report back. IHCSCV will be sharing an update on the survey findings before Drum & Dance Practice dinner. Some of the information may feel heavy, but support will be available on-site for anyone who may need someone to talk to.

We hope to see you there as we continue this important work for our relatives.

For questions regarding the report-out events, please contact Anecita Miller at [email protected].
