Would you share a room with a stranger? 🙀

This is a scary thought for a lot of people, but those that have been open to this arrangement at Rising Tide have found it to be economical… and comfortable. We screen residents for the right fit and compatibility, and ensure that they have the support to work through any issues that arise.

In shared rooms we pay special attention to creating a sense of privacy, plus creative solutions for storage and living space.

Of course sharing is not for everyone, and we also have private rooms, some with their own bathroom attached. We have a variety of offerings to help people find housing in this brutal Bay Area market.

Recently we made room for some temporary residents. A woman and her two older sons (17 & 19) needed a place to stay while securing another apartment. She has a private room, and the boys share another room down the hall. We configured their room to stack sleeping areas, accommodating more living space and a place to do homework.

It’s small but it’s safe, comfortable, and for them it's a temporary stop to plan their next move.

This is one of our larger rooms with a private bath, home to a young woman who came to us through Covenant House, an organization that helps transitional age youth, often coming from foster care or juvenile detention. They subsidize her rent, while she works two jobs. She’s saving her money and will be in a great position to get her own place when the time comes.

Our two properties just south of Lake Merritt in Oakland are set up as cooperative communities. Residents contribute to the upkeep of the household with shared chores, and attend house meetings to make sure the issues are addressed in the household runs smoothly. Friendships have formed and often meals are cooked and shared together.

Co-living is not for everyone, but it’s a great way to have community support while focusing on their next steps in life.

Creating a room for a dad and his 2 boys meant going vertical.

Although we are not set up to accommodate children full-time, we were excited to welcome a new resident who has two sons. They have weekly visitation for one night a week, which we were happy to accommodate. He is in a larger room with a private bathroom, but accommodating a place to sleep for the boys meant going vertical. We put a full-size loft in the room, to maintain the floor space for the dad’s needs the rest of the week.

This resident has aspirations to save money while he’s with us to move out within a year and eventually buy his own place. Seeing his determination and dedication, and his willingness to downsize in service of his bigger goals for his family, we believe he can do it! 💫
