No Lunch Education Initiative Philanthropy, Photography, and Book "No Lunch, No Money, No Rice: The Pursuit of Education in Asia"

No Lunch Education Initiative seeks to help support and fund education of people in developing countries. It was born out of the idea that two teachers traveling in rural Asia could make a difference in people’s lives. These travels have led to the co-founders, Katrina and Tadashi, writing a book sharing people’s stories—in their own words—of getting getting an education in Asia: “No Lunch, No Mon

ey, No Rice: The Pursuit of Education in Asia”. The book’s title is a quote from Xue, age 22, a farmer rural Northern Vietnam. When Xue was asked why she had never been to school, she replied, “When I was a girl, I ask my father if I can go and he say to me, ‘We have no lunch, no money, no rice, no pig, so you cannot go to school.’” A profound, yet sadly common, reason for not going to school.

No Lunch Education Initiative brought two solar suitcases to Nepal to help after the 2015 earthquake. We donated these to , who were first responders. Each solar unit is enclosed in a rugged waterproof shell and can provide power for lighting, charging mobiles, and powering laptops and medical devices. These units were built as part of a high school science class project. Thank you to .jules and Laguna Creek High School in California for their generosity in donating these to the people of Nepal!

In 2015, Many remote mountain villages in the Gorkha region of Nepal were devastated by massive earthquakes. In addition to the lives lost, many families in the area were left homeless, and lost many of their few possessions, including food, livestock, blankets and warm clothing. Meanwhile, landslides made access to these mountain villages even more difficult than usual. Through the Nepalese NGO, Karma Flights, No Lunch Education Initiative was able to provide nearly 500 pounds of donated winter clothing, solar lighting and emergency solar power to the people of Gorkha. Due to their knowledge of the terrain, Karma Flights was able to reach Gorkha long before other relief organizations, providing supplies, temporary shelter and medical aid during the crucial time immediately following the earthquakes. Unfortunately, recovery in this region is still ongoing. In 2017, No Lunch Education Initiative partnered with Karma Flights again to provide a second shipment of clothing to the people of Gorkha.

Gom was the first child we ever sponsored. When we met Gom, she was 14 years old, and was the only girl from her village who was continuing past primary school. She was extremely bright, funny and good hearted, but keeping her in school caused hardship for her family, and her ability to continue was constantly in question. We made some inquiries and were shocked to learn that we could pay all of her school expenses for $10/month! At that cost, how could we NOT sponsor her? We decided to give an additional $5/month to her mother to help offset the loss of income and household help that Gom’s schooling caused. Today, Gom has her own shop, her own car, and is the mother of three children. Her success has allowed her to help her parents and give them financial security.

2014 and 2004!
The photo on the left was taken on the day My gave the valedictorian speech at Danang University after completing the first of her two Bachelors degrees. The photo on the right was taken on the morning that we met My and her family in Hoi An. We began sponsoring My a year or two later. My just completed a Masters degree in Sweden, and we are looking forward to attending her wedding this winter! Congratulations on all your accomplishments, My!

As the days get long and the weather turns cool, we are pulling out our sweaters and warm clothing. But many people in the world are not so lucky. I am going to Nepal this winter, and am once again seeking to bring warm clothing and outwear for the victims of the 2015 earthquake, many of whom are still living in tents and tin shacks. Worse, some have suffered through ensuing mudslides, rebuilding, and wildfires, followed by more rebuilding. Suffice to say that many folks have lost everything multiple times. With winter temps in the Himalayas often being below freezing, the situation there is still dire.

Last winter my family and I brought 500 pounds of warm clothing, health supplies, and solar battery packs. Tadashi and I are going again this winter, and are hoping to bring 200 pounds of supplies. So, while you are pulling out your winter gear, think about which items you no longer wear and consider making them donations to Nepalese earthquake victims. No size is too big or too small. I will happily accept warm blankets and winter coats, boots, and clothing.

We will also gladly accept cash donations, which will be used to purchase relief supplies in-country. You can also donate to KarmaFlights.org

Thank you in advance for your consideration! You can check out this video from last winter, which shows the situation and our boxes being delivered:
