The Insect Sciences Museum of California (ISMC) is a not for profit science and environmental education organization based in Oakland, CA. ISMC engages citizen scientists, especially youth, in explorations of local parks and other urban and open spaces and increases citizen science capacity by celebrating the accomplishments that the public makes in furthering the science of entomology. To this en

d ISMC leads surveys of insect ecosystems, mostly in Northern California. ISMC volunteers train clients in the use of authentic science equipment and techniques. Survey findings are published into park specific guides, photo databases, and learning aids and made available to the public over the Internet. Programs are created to provide client with hands on learning under actual field and lab conditions. In 2018 ISMC hopes to launch "Taking Wing," a project that will organize youth in Oakland to identify, cultivate and share about pollinator habitats throughout the City.

ISMC'ers - Can you help an Entomologist? Specimens needed! The California Institute for Biodiversity (CIB), a non-profit organization based in Berkeley, is conducting several All-Taxa Biotic Inventories, including one called the California Insect Barcoding Initiative (CIBI). CIBI aims to create a DNA reference library with a barcode sequence for each of California's known insect species. Project Coordinator Brad Balukjian is looking for two things: (1) anyone who has a curated collection of insects from California that are identified to species who may be willing to loan specimens to have DNA extracted from (of course you will have access to the data that comes out of this!) and (2) anyone who knows of an insect collection in need of rescue/a home, as the CIB has funding for the long-term storage of collections that might otherwise be tossed. Brad is reachable at [bbalukjian AT gmail DOT com](mailto:[email protected]). Thanks so much!

DPR Announces New Neonicitinoid Restrictions - People who love the environment and insects, in particular, will be happy to know that government (California), at least, is working on restricting one of the environment's most harmful classes of insecticides. "Neonics" are systemics that can work their way into every part of plant, including its pollen and nectar - making it highly toxic to native bees and non-target insect species. Europe has banned this class of insecticides already. However, in the U.S. the pesticide lobby is very strong and our environment and way of life at at their mercy.

SACRAMENTO – The California Department of Pesticide Regulation is preparing to implement a new state law that will limit most retail sales and non-agricultural outdoor uses of neonicotinoid type pesticides to licensed applicators, effective January 1.

So sad to hear about the passing of Martin Griffin. He helped set aside the the nature preserve named after him and a couple of other preserves that make up Audubon Canyon Ranch (ACR). ACR is a favorite insect study area for the groups I help lead.
