Restoring Our Communities

Restoring Our Communities The Restoring Our Communities Initiative (ROCI) is a student led program by and for formerly incarcerated students at Laney College in Oakland, California.

Restoring Our Communities (ROC) is a program at Laney College in Oakland, California that is in its initial stages of development and implementation. The goal of ROC is to support and equip formerly incarcerated students to transcend reentry barriers, envision and implement their educational goals, make informed decisions, increase their self-determination and create positive life outcomes for the

mselves, their families and the broader community. ROC has partnered with the Underground Scholars Initiative at UC Berkeley, the Alameda County Community Food Bank, and Building Opportunities for Self-sufficiency to provide resources, academic guidance, peer-support, and inclusive community by:

1) Pipelining formerly incarcerated students into living wage job industries through community partnerships and Laney College’s Career and Technical Education Programs.

2) Creating a peer mentoring center/service to create a community cohort that supports academic transfer to 4-year institutions.

3) On-ramping formerly incarcerated women of color into either of the two above strands.

4) Developing an Emergency Food Distribution Model with design emphasis on systems impacted students (formerly incarcerated, on community supervision, with incarcerated family members) that will expand services into an institutionalized Emergency Food Pantry. We ask that you share ROC’s page and information with anyone you think may benefit from knowing about us. We also welcome your interest if you wish to collaborate with us to ensure ROC achieves its goals and remains a sustainable program that can expand to serve community colleges statewide and nationwide. PLEASE STAY TUNED…more information coming soon!

Dr. Stanley Andrisse blessed us with his presence and a few of his books. You can find them online, it’s called From Prison Cells to PhD and it is a story about his life. Jevon was in the building so he got in the picture and I ran into former ROC student Linda on campus. She works for parking enforcement for the City of Oakland! Just another day at the ROC!
