PLACE Our community maker space allows folks to gain access to the tools they need to create for their communities.

PLACE, located on Huichin Territory, Ohlone Chochenyo Native lands (in North Oakland), is an educational center, maker space and community resource for healing, organizing, regenerative design and affordable housing This sustainability hub allows people to see solutions in practice and gain access to the knowledge and resources to empower them to take action in their own lives, neighborhoods, town

s, cities, and bio-regions. We wish this green center will replicate into communities across the world through the integration with community centers, schools, park & recreation facilities and other local organizations.

TODAY, February 28th is the Final day to complete our decommissioning of PLACE. Come thru if you can 1121 64th street, Oakland CA 94608. It has been a whirlwind of a couple months as we have successfully donated loads of our equipment to other non-profit organizations, emerging community art spaces, schools, and fellow neighbors. What some experts thought would take 40 to 80 yards of dumpsters, we have managed to dump only 8 yards of unusable things, as we have made every effort to re-home things to mission aligned groups. We will be making a more thorough report of who received pieces of PLACE in the near future, but we just wanted to honor the efforts of all the volunteers who have been showing up to assist in this process. It was certainly more time consuming than tossing in a big dumpster, but in the end, the equipment, tools and resources have a 2nd, 3rd and 4th life, as we have stayed in alignment with our ecological values to reduce, re-use, and recycle. In the golden hour of today, between 4:30pm and 5:30pm, we are going to make a toast to the 15 years of community service and take a final group photo of the cleared space with any volunteers and supporters still around, and to acknowledge those who came by these past 2 months to help us decommission the space. Any drone photo folks out there want to come document?

PLACE is closing its doors after 15 years and will be hosting a final event on Sunday January 18th at 1pm at our neighbors St. Columba church. For the next 2 weeks we will be publishing old videos here as a way to remind ourselves of some of what PLACE has been. The first video is a timelapse of our renovating the barn in the early years. Please also consider donating to our closing fundraiser in the comments to help cover costs associated with de-commissioning a 10,000 square foot facility.

After 15 years of PLACE serving the Bay Area, we are deeply sad to announce that our time at our 64th Street home In North Oakland will be coming to a close by the end of February 2026. We are seeking your support to coordinate the next chapter of PLACE in its imminent transition.

SAVE THE DATE: JANUARY 18th FOR OUR FAREWELL EVENT! (see below)

Over the past several years, the property where PLACE is located has been impacted by evolving city code compliance and permitting requirements. These regulatory constraints significantly limited our ability to continue operating the full range of community education, arts, and affordable housing that PLACE has historically provided. Despite years of sustained efforts and extensive multi-stake holder discussions and negotiations, we were unable to obtain the timely permissions and approvals necessary to continue providing services at this location.

CHANGING WITH THE TIMES
From its inception in 2011, PLACE has been stewarded by a diverse, inter-generational community of artists, educators, builders, gardeners, neighbors, and organizers who believe that housing justice, creative expression, and ecological sustainability are deeply interconnected. Since 2021, PLACE has intentionally prioritized QTBIPOC communities, creating safer, affirming spaces rooted in care, visibility, and belonging. Together, we have grown and built living models of community engagement and mutual support that are more vital now than ever in these challenging times.

While this physical location is closing, PLACE, the organization, is not ending. We have been actively exploring partnerships and new opportunities—including collaborations with other local organizations working on innovative affordable housing and creative community solutions—so that the values, practices, and relationships that have been incubated over the past 15 years can continue in new forms at different places.

HONORING RELATIONSHIPS
From humble beginnings to becoming a vital community hub of creativity, connection, and care, PLACE has grown into something far greater than we ever envisioned. What started as a small space for experimentation and gathering blossomed into a place where art meets resilience, ecology meets justice, and people meet possibility. PLACE has been nurtured by the hands and hearts of so many — and this moment is an opportunity to reflect on that history, honor the relationships that lifted us, and recognize the collaborative spirit that continues to sustain this work together.

PLACE was built on the belief that community space is a tool for healing, learning, and collective transformation — a belief that has been realized through countless workshops, gatherings, performances, mutual aid actions, cultural exchanges, regenerative building efforts, and everyday acts of creativity and care. Over the years PLACE has welcomed and been shaped by diverse voices and practices: art and music that invite connection, gardening, permaculture and Indigenous Knowledge that teach us about our interdependence with the Earth, shared meals and story circles that hold space for joy and vulnerability, and skill-shares that empower us to build, repair, and imagine together.

HEARTFELT GRATITUDE
To each of the organizations that have shared resources, extended invitations to collaborate, or simply showed up with open hearts — Thank You!

To every workshop facilitator who taught us a new way of seeing, every musician who helped us feel more alive, every volunteer who sweated alongside us in Action days or gardening circles, and every participant who made PLACE a site of belonging: we see you, we honor you, and we carry your contributions forward.
Our gratitude extends beyond the walls of PLACE and into the wider community — civic allies, cultural workers, mutual aid networks, and intergenerational teachers whose commitment to justice, equity, and collective flourishing continues to inspire and ground us.

Here’s to the next chapter — grounded in gratitude, fueled by collaboration, and rooted in the bold truth that community spaces transform lives and strengthen the bonds that hold us together.

HOW YOU CAN HELP
If you feel called to help PLACE during our transition, please consider contributing to our Gofundme campaign (LINK IN COMMENTS BELOW) to support with moving and storage costs, as well as a future capital campaign.

Please fill out our PLACE Closing–2026 Volunteer Form (LINK IN COMMENTS BELOW) to support with the needs for the physical move as well as addressing any of the items listed below.

In addition to any financial contributions, we need help with the following:

1) Identifying or securing a new property for future community education, maker-space activities and affordable housing
2) Assisting with site breakdown, packing, and preparation for storage during upcoming action days
3) Re-homing surplus tools, equipment, and supplies with other community organizations
4) Help with our farewell event; more info to come!

Hello friends and allies of PLACE!

We appreciate your many many hands of support through volunteering, teaching, inventing, building, gardening, feasting, cooking, music playing, art making, giving, connecting and loving for the past 14 years—who would have thought we would come this far since that humble and innocent beginning in 2011!

Now coming into 2025 we really could use your financial support more than ever, as we continue the process for legalizing PLACE and all it’s activities you've enjoyed.

Please read this End of Year letter to understand more about where we’ve been but more importantly where we’re heading with the evolution of it’s leadership to QTBIPOC. We hope you’ll consider continuing to support this vital community space!🥰
